View Full Version : Anything bad I should know about a Suburban?

So we are getting ready to buy a new car to replace our van. My wife’s uncle has a pimped out Suburban. It is a 2002 with 30k miles, navigation, dual entertainment screens DVD, leather. Wants 10k for it. I had trouble finding a loan for it because its older so I’m just going to pay cash. Has any one ever had or herd any problems with this type of car? The only thing I can see is the MPG will not be good since its a V8, but for the price I’m getting it for its hard to pass up.

Pretty sure all the C1500s, Tahoes and Burbs have the same frame/engine and shit.

To be honest I've been a fan of all three since the new body came out in 88' and have spent a good amount of time on fullsizechevy.com and can't really remember there being any particular years that had major issues such as trannys/engine etc the 305/350 which I believe most have seems to be fairly reliable I've probably known 15 or so people with one or the other and most have done 150k+

I'd hop on FSC and look around to see what you can fine.

Also congrats on the sweet deal ;) For the price and miles the shitty mileage can be overlooked IMO

my dad has a 99 tahoe and my mechanic has a 99 burb. the trans likes to go at about 130k, but it's definately one of the best gm made vehicles.

We have a 2004. Just know that your wheels don't look as nice as our five spokes, your tail lights have red around the outside instead of smoke, etc...

Avoid Z71's because the painted bumpers will rust like a mofo. (Go for the LT, ours pwns)

Our On-Star microphone rattles sometimes and is annoying as fuck. It's probably an easy fix though.

The door panels might squeak a little bit when you lean on them.

They tow really well. We've had a 16' dual axle trailer full of furniture and shit and that was no problem, our boat is no problem at all.

I think we have an average of like 14 MPG, which really isn't bad IMO considering how big the truck is and all of the towing we do.

Keep track of your daytime running lights, as those will go out all the time. (Same with any GM truck that has DRL's. Must be a shitty bulb design)

BTW best tires we've had on any of our suburbans (We had a '94 before our 2004) are the Michelin LTX. Rides smooth and quiet on the freeway, and whoops some ass in the snow.

wifes uncle had a 96 said he put some chip in it so tranny would not shift so much when pulling trailer.said chip was around $250.00 . I pulled a 20 foot trailer and yes she shifted more than normal, but i aint getin one.

Two of the best engines there are.
Fuck this JDM "inline" fuel-economy bullshit.

my 99 is at 160k and trans is running like a champ.

with that said, passcode decided it didnt like the resistor in the key anymore, 600 dollhairs... but i get to rock a new tahoe key like the cool guys.

fuel pump went out... damn near as much. prob from running it on E all the time when i was a poor, staring college student.

crack in the window from me punching it ??? dollars

have developed a slightly inconvenient and very embarrassing problem... the linkage in the door is broken, so i have to roll my window down and open the door from the outside.

AC went out, and transfer case seal was fucked. had them take all the AC stuff out and replace the xf case seal. 300 bucks.

with that said, these trucks are a FUCKING CHAMP in snow, providing you have good tires. got some wranglers on there right now and they're a bit more noisy then my michelins but seem to do a little better in the snow. the ride is great, they can tow... even a 99 (just dont leave it in OD). Great trucks.
