My g/f wants a nice camera, something along the lines of a DSLR but not I don't think she wants to go down that route yet, plus I'm not dropping that type of money if she's not going to use it often, or even know how to properly use it.
Now I don't know dick about cameras. Been looking at long zoom cameras, seem like a decent in-between from a point and shoot to a full blown DSLR.
The Panasonic FZ40 has gotten some good reviews and it's ~$300, which I don't mind spending on a decent camera.

What do you fuckers think? Any suggestions? She just wants to take some decent pics, nothing too serious. Maybe some high-res pics of my pooper, ya know?

eBay.
You can find older model DSLRs for not a lot...would $500 be too much?
Does she actually want to learn photography, or is this just a casual thing?
Problem with long zooms is that they're usually as slow as a Geo Metro with HHRLisa behind the wheel - in photography terms, "slow" means the lens doesn't collect a lot of light when the shutter is opened. A "fast" lens will let you take photos with no flash in more places, because it has a larger aperture (like your pooper).

$500 is a bit much...got a wedding to pay for broseph. But, I wouldn't mind dropping $3-400, however I don't think it's worth it for me to buy her a DSLR if she isn't going to use it somewhat regularly. I think she wants to learn photography...but casually. She's not too serious about it. She's had nothing but point and shoots to this point.

still would need a lense, but you could pick up the 18-55 on the cheap. not the greatest lense, but decent to start with.

These fuckers are against bridge cams. I however am a big fan of my Canon SX20 IS. I do not know anything about the one you posted though. however, I am sure you would not be disappointed in the Canon.

They've just released an sx30is that looks amazing as well, so the sx20 should be going for a good price.
The Sx30 is 14.1MP, 35x zoom.
Edit: oh and that zoom is optical.

I just checked out dickmilker's camera faggots thread...how's that Canon XS?
I can prob get some gift cards to Amazon from my bank reward points, so $500 isn't too bad.

It really depends on if you have to have new or not.
The XS is a great starting off point for DSLR, however I would say to get a D series if you don't mind used (20d/40d, etc)

It's something I'll have to think about. I'd prefer new, just because it's a gift, but I also think a nice used camera makes for a good gift if it's a nice one.

So I'm getting the Canon XS. Spoke to the lady and she feels better getting a new camera than picking up a used one.
There's a reputable local place that's got the Canon XS with a case, tripod, cleaning kit, and 1hr of lessons/demo for $400. Going tomorrow to pick it up.

I will ask around. How much and what comes with it? You get a T2i or something?

So I got the XS, they didn't have the kit lens in stock so they gave me a Sigma 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6
I've taken about 50 shots so far, and I really like this thing. Been trying to learn the basics in regards to apeture, ISO settings, etc.
I'm going to pick up the Canon EF 50mm F/1.8 II lens, which everyone seems to recommend as a good starting point. Have UV filter on there and a polarizer on the way.
Anything else anyone recommends? Any other good lenses to look at? Most of the shooting is just recreation, so if anyone knows of a decent all-purpose zoom lens lmk
