Cable, DSL, T1/3, Satellite? What are your speeds? I ask because mine is utterly disgusting. I'm using internet by satellite because their are no cable providers that come to my house... I cannot wait for Fios :crap:

I'm jealous. The worst part is I don't live in a rural area. Why the fuck Comcast doesn't service is is beyond me

I use DSL:

However, I download 350+ kb/s off my torrents. So, I'm happy with it. We don't pay much for it either.

Indeed not too bad for 44 Mbps.

I was lucky to get 3-5 Mbps during non peak times and .5-2 during peak times with my Time Warner. I also paid about the same I do now. So for about $5 more a month I got about 30-40 Mbps.

Well, that depends on your package and node capacity. If you order the 12mbs package, and your node can handle the speedboost feature, you'll average around 26-30mbs dl. They can only guarantee the speeds that your package says as only the engineers of your plant know what each node can handle.

BTW, the test on my post was with an 8mbs package

Thanks that is kind of what I figured, I just did not know if they usually cap it at 12MB on the package or not. I never really thought it would feel this slow but it really is horrible.

They seem to double the larger packages too bad they don't double the 1mb to 2mb it may be a bit more bearable.

Yeah, they got rid of the 4mb package and offer only a 1mb package. The new packet filter that they are using for the 1mb package is strong as hell.

BTW they are only offering this package to compete with DSL speeds and prices. I think its a major fail.

Pigeon beats Internet firm in data transfer race
Bird with card strapped to leg triumphs in 50-mile South African showdown

Bird-mail faster than e-mail
Sept. 10: A company in South Africa proved it's faster to send data by carrier pigeon than by e-mail because of the country's unreliable internet connection. Msnbc.com's Keva Andersen reports.
msnbc.com

updated 7:25 a.m. ET, Thurs., Sept . 10, 2009
JOHANNESBURG, South Africa - A South African company on Wednesday proved it was faster to transmit data by carrier pigeon than to send it using the country's leading internet service provider.

Local news agency SAPA reported the 11-month-old pigeon, Winston, took one hour and eight minutes to fly the 50 miles from Unlimited IT's offices near Pietermaritzburg to the coastal city of Durban with a data card strapped to its leg.

Including downloading, the transfer took two hours, six minutes and 57 seconds — the time it took for only four percent of the data to be transferred using a line provided by Telkom.

SAPA said Unlimited IT performed the stunt after becoming frustrated with slow internet transmission times.

The company has 11 call centers around the country and regularly sends data to its other branches.

Telkom could not immediately be reached for comment.

Internet speed and connectivity in Africa's largest economy are poor because of a bandwidth shortage. It is also expensive.

Internet speed is expected to improve once a new 10,500-mile underwater fiber optic cable linking southern and East Africa to other networks becomes operational before South Africa hosts the soccer World Cup next year.

Then learn how to use a PC properly. People who reformat often don't know how to use them.

DING.

Apparently he can't hack a Wii either just like 97gp. Learn how to make your PC protect and maintain. Experiment in virtual environments, keep PCs running and scheduled to update and maintain on regular basis including important programs like A/V. Although it is easy work letting shit go wrong and just reformat/reinstall so long as one keeps good backups as well.

I do this too. I have 1 TB of storage across three drives. The only time I need to reinstall is when a new OS comes out.

There are two types of PC users. The first doesn't know how to maintain the OS properly and just reinstalls if there is an issue. The second knows how an OS works and does some maintenance, and the OS stays crisp and fresh. In the end, I suppose each spends equal amounts of time doing things. By the time I install a new OS, I've probably spent as much time on maintenance as the other type does reinstalling.

meh. I'm lazy. I don't have issues.. it's just a lag I can tell gets worse over a period of a couple months..

Win7ultimate installs in less than 30 minutes for me and all my software is already backed up. So 30 minutes of format time & another 20 or so in reinstalling software.. ehhh, I'd rather do that.
