Anybody know a thing or two about surround sound?

I got a NASA research scholarship, so I'm gonna buy a surround sound system :D. I think that ideally I'm looking for a 5.1 system, because it doesn't seem that a lot of 7.1 is used ever. I'm looking to spend around $400-500 dollars, and I want an iPod dock, if possible. I have no idea what to look for. I want really punchy and responsive bass, and clear & crisp sound quality from the mids and highs. I don't really want to go balls to the wall and piece it together, I just want a Home Theater in Box setup.

Ok, just a HTIB setup for like $400-500.
That gives me the most bang for my buck.

NASA money = pocket money. AKA surround sound/tattoo/half-O of Sour D/whatever money. I'm probably also going to get some comps and amp them for my car.

I may be a dumbass here, but if you get a scholarship, don't use it for school...unless you are implying that you already have a scholarship and this is just extra.

I don't. I guess that would be a reason I asked. I'm thinking about going into Genetics or Biotechnology myself.
