if i have a 110 amp alternator and i wanted to get an 2500-3000 watt amp, how big of an alternator would i need to get without putting an extra battery in the trunk?
also, would i need to upgrade the stock battery?
Depends on the amp bro, and the wiring.
But the short answer is this: Get as big of an alt as you can. can never go overkill, and for 99% of the time you are using said alternator, you will never get its maximum output.

what about this part?
Wouldn't hurt.
If it was me, I would start with the battery.

Let's do some math
I = P / E so current = power (in watts) divided by voltage( in volts)
so 3000/12= 250 amps
so that means at full tilt your looking at 250 amps of current draw from that one amp. Your going to need more than a high ouput alt. I would definately ditch the stock battery for an aftermarket agm battery. Unless you plan on running your car the entire time your system is on, you would be better off with an additional battery as well in the trunk.
Suppose you buy a 250 amp alt. That alt will only put out that 250 amps at 4-5k rpm ( depends on the alt setup) at idle you are looking at probably in the ball park of 75 amp or so if your lucky.
So lets go back to our math problem from earlier
250amp draw max. Let's use half of that draw for a realistic continuous current draw.
so 125 amps. With your alt pumping out around 75amp at idle. You would still be drawing 50amp from your battery....................check out the ratings on a battery for a constant 50 amp draw ;)

I've seen some large cases deliver as much as 200@idle. IIRC they were XS Power. If not XS maybe DC? I can't remember. Its early.

You are correct, there are a few higher priced alts that will do monsterous power at idle. Still would get an extra battery or two for that monstrous alt to charge for reserve. An alt running full tilt constantly won't last long.

IMHO I would do at least two hc batteries and the alt. I compete in SQ. I'm running around 4k rms. So I have to have the car run for at least 20 minutes at a time with ignition off. With an hour or so of recharge time between with multiple judges. With my current electrical setup it's no problem what so ever. You can crank the system to your hearts content for about an hour before the car starts showing signs of low voltage. I run a die hard platinum group 34 under the hood, and two platinum group 65's in the trunk, plus a 240amp alt.
loving me some die hard platinums. Couple companies sell this same battery with a different case for more money ;)

i'm def not gonna be running the car even at half volume without it turned all the way on. this is gonna be a daily driver. in fact, the only time i leave the music on and cut the car off is when i'm getting gas and that takes about 3 minutes at most. shit man, i don't even turn the voulume up half way i'm driving on the interstate at 65 -85mph!! my kenwood goes up to 34..... my normal volume is 6 - 11.
is the HO alt and 2 batteries overkill for me?
I have a D31T optima YT that I can probably sell you pretty cheap in a week or two as long as this other battery is good.

If this is the case, then I would just updgrade the under hood battery to start. Run your current alt until it's dead, then upgrade it.
Buy an irragi alt. Top notch customer service.

If you want a good alt I'd suggest Mechman or DC power.
As stated, 2 new batteries would be a good start. I'd do that first and see how your voltage situation is. If you are still having problems, then it would be new alt time.

Depending on what amp and such you're running, you may not need a ho alt. I, for instance, ran an ia 20.1 at .5 ohms with a cheapo batt up front and a nsb 125 in the back with stock alt and never went below 13 volts full tilt.

But seriously, just watch your voltage if you can and see what kind of dips you get during extended bass notes. mid-high 12's is ok at times, below that and you could start having problems.

seriuouslee, i don't need more than 2500 watts but 2000 minimum. i'd never run it at full tilt. i think the loudest i ever turned my shit up was to 22/34 and i was outside the car

Get a voltage gauge and mount it in the dash somewhere.
But odds are with ~2000 watts and 2 nice batteries you shouldn't have any problems.

Had my excessive amperage for almost 6 years as well.
Though I think it might be on it's last leg. I had to take it apart last year before finals and tighten up the output stud.
I think it's time for a 270 amp Mechman. :)

A simple dmm can be a wonderful tool. With your car running, voltage should be over 13.4v. If it's below your alt is having problems. Upgrade the under the hood battery, fire everything up and check the voltage with the dmm.

your 110 may hold just fine for a while but i would get a bigger battery bank in the trunk first instead of upgrading the alt. or get them both at the same time. the alt alone may or may not maintain 1 battery but if your car is efficient like mine and doesn't run the alt 24/7 then you will need to depend on stored power.. my civic kinda shuts the alt off when the extra juice isn't needed unless if i run the a/c or so which would then allow my voltage to stay above 14.#v.. if i don't use anything and just drive the car will maintain a 12.#v and kick the alt on every so often for short burst..
i currently have a 180a EA alt, kinetik 2400 in the trunk, a saz3000D, and 2 other amps for comps and tweets. though right now i need to replace my trunk batt as it's pretty damn old, but i can maintain my voltage pretty well..
