Forgive a noob, but why is a light bulb so expensive?

When you buy a car, the engine is expensive to replace. Same applies here.

You've obviously never looked into a coral reef aquarium... here's a little tidbit. For a small 10 gallon tank, I need a $150 dollar light fixture. I don't think that comes with the light itself. As for a projector, it's the MAIN part, and it's strong as hell. Your regular incandescent light bulb can't do shit.

that's serious. I guess I just never realized that something who's only job is to receive an electrical current could cost so much

Well, the thing is, for non-incandescent bulbs, you need ballasts... and ballasts are expensive. Basically, if you just hook up any old Flourescent bulb or Metal Halide bulb to power, it will just keep getting hotter... and hotter... and brighter... and brighter. Until it s'plodes. The ballasts are expensive. They basically regulate the voltage, but also gives the boost of voltage when you first start up the bulb, and during the heat up process. That's where most of the money's in, to tell you the truth.
Projector (and TV's for that matter) bulbs probably have internal ballasts (like those Hallogen bulbs that are becoming popular for home use.) But, it has to be hard core, so the technology is expensive.

NP. I'm just now researching in lights (I plan to make my own little coral reef tank. Only like 10g, with maybe a 1g sump, so it'll only be 9g. I'm still planning it all.) and for coral reefs you need precise lighting, well as precise as possible. So I'm doing a lot of research on lights and the like. I was actually wondering myself why the damn fixtures are so expensive, and that's when I found out that ballasts are a shit load.
