Ive had all game consoles 3 times and sell every time. lulz. I have a spare laptop with a broken screen running my HTPC now. It seems to be getting slower though. I could upgrade it but this seems like a viable option. Ebay has them sub $100.

For $70 more you can get an Arcade Xbox360... which is superior to the WD seeing how you can play games.

What does this thing do exactly?

Still looking for a device where I can rip DVDs from my laptop to "device"
Plug "device" into TV

From the TV, pick movies I have ripped through some kind of "on screen" deal...with no laptop or network involved.

Is this what this thing does?

bluecar
04-19-2009, 01:15 PM
This makes no sense. Think of how you'd actually use this thing if it doesn't have networking. You have to plug the USB drive into your computer and load it up with content, and then disconnect it, move it to your home theater and plug it into this widget to play back your stuff on the big screen? The price is right, but it needs to cost $25 more and have ethernet and simple file sharing before it's remotely useful.

According to this fellow who calls it useless, it does exactly what I want it to do.

As much as you want. It is dependent upon the size of the HDD you buy.

No, think of it as the thing connected to your computer monitor at work.

Internet is not required unless you want to dl from the webs.

Intranets are just an internal network. No need for it unless you want to 'talk to it' from your laptop.

Wireless is the same as Internet. No need unless you want it to talk to something other than the TV.

Though I would recommend getting a wireless router. Just makes life easier and you don't even have to count it as another thing in your 100 items. You can count it as part of your computer.

So, in order to use this thing, I'd still have to have my laptop connected to it. I do not want to do this.

I think the way Iam explained it before is best...buy a server, get one of those deals that connect wire to server (I don't do wireless, people hax me) and somehow magically I can find the movies on the server from my TV.

No, I did not say that. It works on its own. It that thing connected to your monitor at work except it uses your TV as the monitor.

Your computer is a 'server'. There is no difference other than what is installed on it. I have two VM (virtual machines) installed on this very laptop and they are both servers. It is just a box with electronical shit inside. You don't have to hardwire it to anything. No hax. It is stand alone between it and your TV if desired. If you don't want it to talk to anything else, you just need to get a hardwired keyboard that you can plug into it at will so you can pick movies.

The biggest advantage is multi-format compatibility, especially if you're downloading stuff. The reason I don't use my 360 to stream content is because it can't handle FLAC and it can't handle MKV; almost all my music is FLAC, and almost all my HD stuff is MKV.

Now if you were only going to be ripping stuff and not downloading, you might as well get a 360 for a bit more because you can rip to whatever format (likely WMV) you prefer and you'd get all the other benefits of a 360.

I have a PS3 already. Somehow there is a way to make it store movies I rip from my laptop.

In the past, they said I could rip a movie from my laptop to a HDD. Plug the HDD into the PS3. Somehow, magically, the PS3 would find the movies and play them. I haven't heard anyone say specifically if this will work.

If you can hold off till at least next monday/tue, it will be much cheaper than if I ship it this week. I'm off of work this week, but when i'm at work I can ship from there giving me the corporate discount through ups.

They are saying 11.75 so I would think between 7-9 through work.

Honestly, it really makes no difference to me at all. If you want it, it is only 5 minutes out of my day and I get to go talk to my old team (I was their boss for a long time, never get to see them really :( )

send paypal info.

I'll get shipping info from you in the next few days and mail it out...after it gets there and all is well, you can send me the shipping back. 10 bucks isn't gonna break me ;)

(I just don't like having money in and nothing out like that)
