I just arrived back from a business trip to China. Simpy put, exhausting!!

Went from Columbus to Chicago
Chicago to Beijing
Beijing to a city in China
Drove 2 hours to a smaller city to meet a supplier
Drove back an hour to our hotel for 2 nights
Back to Beijing
Met another supplier the next day and then went to the forbidden city
Next morning got on an airplane and had a layover in Japan from there to DC and then back home.

Not all that much exciting to talk about because it was mostly work but some cool pictures and the food was great!

Smog was AWFUL! It's actually very high end city, minus the smog. No, we had a driver at each location. Driving is SCARY as hell. They drive however they want wherever they want and really follow no laws for it (driving on the other side, speeding, cutting each other off, running red lights, driving on the side walks etc) No way that I could possibly drive. We flew economy. Economy from here to there was 1600 and business was 5200 and 1st was 22,000. Total trip home was 24 hours going there was about 16 hours.

Gobi desert?

I'm not sure. Lanzhou area.

Fin.

Couple of interesting things that I discovered. First, they have WAY better cars than we do. Most of the cars I saw were Audi A6 or A8, Mercedes, JW, etc. I thought they would have more older generation cars but they were mostly new.

Road conditions are awesome! They actually replace many of their roads twice a year. We didn't have any pot holes, very smooth driving.

They are far more caring of their guests. The second supplier we have purchased only 2 parts in 10 years and they still sent a driver, brought us to their company, took us to lunch, drove us an hour to the forbidden city!

Clothing costs way more in China than in the states. Inflation is a bitch (part of the current valuation of the RMB).

Fun you say that PyPy, whores are everywhere. If you want to get a massage and they are not blind or dont have a certification, pretty much bet that it is prostitution.

Pink lights are a dead give away. No, I was no where near anything like that and although medium level hotels usually will call your office and ask if you want a massage, we were in 5-star so there was nothing like that going on.

the trip wasn't nearly as expensive as I thought. 2000 for airfare, including the internal flights...most likely would have been a grand on food for the whole week although my suppliers bought almost everytime. My point is anyone wanting to go could do it for not that expensive. Tickets would have been cheaper if we wouldn't have decided 2 weeks prior to travel.

I was also impressed with how quickly they have grown into a modern culture. Now I was in a few parts that were totally NOT as well. But piles of trash are not worth taking pictures of.

Also, in the desert they dig big holes in the mountains where they live and store goods. I have a picture somewhere, I'll try to find one.

Economicly speaking, if 4 chinese raise up out of poverty for every 1 middle class worker that drops down in these economically turbulent times, that's a pretty good deal.

I can't speak for pl8er's own experience, but my guess is that about 95% of all the businessmen spoke damn near perfect conversational english. Locals and just tradesmen probably speak broken english, but enough to understand. The farmers and small town folk probably don't understand a lick of it.

pl8er
01-22-2011, 11:53 AM
Very broken English in conversation. Good travel tip for you guys. Hand gestures are easy to confuse. Instead, write down (formally) what you want. They all learn English and very proper at that. They don't practice speaking it, but they can almost always read and write some of it.
