I'd stick with subaru...maybe legacy (I think)...only thing I know of that's both older and AWD with decent mpg.

Oh, I understand. Perhaps you'd be willing to scale back some of your requirements. Abdicating AWD is a big step towards that.

Going without AWD would mean I'd be getting stuck again all winter. Remember, I live a few states north of you. I could barely get places that were 4 - 5 blocks away over the winter. I have a grueling few years of commuting long distances ahead of me. :(

My mom's Saturn Vue can go from Miami to Orlando, drive around in Orlando a bit and come back on about 12-15 gallons. It's I4, though. IIRC... and no 4x4. But they do have that option, I believe.

I could an hour or so depending on the price. I realize AWD and good gas mileage don't go hand in hand, but I was seeing if there were any options I may have forgotten about.
With the bimmer I plan on cleaning it up, repairing a few things, and putting on eBay here in the next couple weeks. I'll probably start the bidding at $3,000 and see if I can even get any bids with that price. I've put $10,000 into the car and have the receipts to show it, but it does have 225xxx miles on it so that will detour some. If it doesn't sell, I'll just keep it and use it as my commuter. Depending on how much it sells for (if it even sells), I'll probably just use all of that as a down payment on another car.
I have huge dreams for my car, but my current finances and the next few years of school simply won't allow it.

Totally understood. So you want to use the BMW money as a down? What do you want to spend total?
So you're willing to go with something other than awd then?

I just know I don't want payments to exceed $200 a month. I could do something without awd, but I really do want some sort of 4x4. This puts me in an awkward place tho since I'm going to have a hell of a commute for the next 3 years.
If by some miracle I happen to get around the $4,000 mark for my car I'll just buy another vehicle with cash and not finance.
I'm sure I could get something decent if I sold my bimmer and my bike... I just don't think I'm ready to give up the bike just yet ;)

:gay: I could care less about the stereotype associated with the subaru wagons. Actually, the only person I know who has one was my art teacher in high school. She was definitely a lesbo. The car doesn't make the man.
I would love a Wrangler, but they don't really have the gas mileage I'm looking for. Keep in mind, I'm going to have a long ass commute. SM said his long commute in a wrangler sucked ass.
Werd just get a fwd car, I don't think awd is necessary
I was stuck way too many times last winter. If I'm going to be stuck in Indiana for another few years I'm going to need some kind of power to all 4 wheels.
This. I'm in the Chicago area and my Camry has never given me problems in the winter and I still ride on all seasons in the winter. FWD and snow tires should be no problem.
Driving in Chicago in the winter is much different than driving in Bloomington or on long twisty roads in the middle of nowhere.

RWD and manual. Sorry, not everyone can have an automatic FWD powerhouse.
WTF does being fwd or rwd have to do with it?

I think that's probably it. I never get stuck in the snow.
Neither do I.

Most of the time my Hoe is in RWD. I only put it in 4wd when i'm contemplating doing something stupid.

FWD are generally better in the snow than RWD. There is more control on snow when pulling versus pushing.

Which is why you don't need awd and could get by with a fwd car, it would give you a lot more cars to choose from. But if you want awd then you go for it sunshine.

I believe it has more to do with the weight being on the drive wheels. As well ass the drive wheels also being the main axis.
It was the Auto/Manual comment that threw me though, snow fearing fuckboy.

AWD gives you a false sense of security/overconfidence when driving in snow imo.

Because all cars brake the same.

And break the same, as James has been experiencing.

I am selling my '05 Saab 93t. It most likely does not have the space you are looking for,, if you are trying to transport music gear but the back seats come down and I can get a fair amount of stuff in there. About 35 average on the highway (if you are not abusing the turbo) and in excellent condition.
And it is in the same town as you!! Might as well take a look.

i maybe biased, but i think an explorer will do you good. one with the 4.0 ohv motor.
reliable as all hell, decent power, can get them 4 wheel or course, and decent gas mileage (i get 21mph highway, with 200k on the clock).
good car. i saw one recently at a dealer for under 5000 and it was an 01, so a private party should do you really good.

While FWD is good in the snow, it cannot stand up to an AWD in terms of overall traction. I've had many FWD, including one with a custom fitted Posi-trac differential. It was great in the snow. When I bought my Audi, though, I changed my tune. An AWD car offers great traction when launching and driving by having equal weight on all drive wheels. It also offers superior braking by applying engine braking at all four corners. You don't get that with a FWD.
That being said, I would look into a Subaru, Volvo, or older Audi/VW as they all offer AWD models to pick from. If you are looking Japanese, an older CRV may be in order.

So I went a test drove a 2004 RAV4 and it was absolutely awful. Besides the cheap looking interior and the hideous styling, I couldn't get comfortable no matter how I adjusted the seat. After test driving that thing, I decided to just keep my car. I remember how much it sucked to have car payments, and I don't want to take on any more until I'm done with school.
Thank you for all the input everyone.
