VF-34 vs VF-22

The vf-22's usually sell for around 450-550 and are pretty common.

The vf-34's on the other hand are usually sold around 600 ish if not more used
and are super hard to find.


Vf-22 specs.
IHI VF22
(460cfm at 18.0psi, 250-325whp, Bolt-On)
This is the standard equipment turbocharger used on the JDM V3 Subaru Impreza WRX and optional on the JDM Subaru Impreza WRX STi 22b. Of all the IHI models, the VF22 has the largest potential for peak horsepower, and is capable of supporting the highest boost levels. It is capable of running up to 25 psi. The VF22 is a roller bearing turbo that utilizes the P20 exhaust housing.

Now the last thing is, there is a guy on the local subaru club selling a vf-34.
He says it has very very slight shaft play and it takes a pinch longer to build boost than it used to. He is selling for 200 obo so figure 150. Now normally i would avoid it but considering it they are so hard to find it may be my only choice.

Which one would you choose?

when I worked for precision anything that went to the repair dept came through my dept first. There was a constant stream of blown and seized turbos coming in of all brands and styles. They are not something that lasts forever, these things are operating in severe conditions. I would never even buy a used turbo unless it was checked and approved for use by a reputable shop. Too much work to install only to take it apart later when the thing pukes.

Yes it does, which is why i sent blouch an email asking if they are still rebuilding the ihi vf series turbo's. Im waiting for them to get back to me before i do anything.

I never heard of any "play in the shaft" being a minor thing. Don't think I would want any play in something that is spinning a metal blade upwards of of 80-90k rpm.

Seriously, pass on this one. By the specs given, they aren't much different than the 22s. The P18 exhaust housing is what is responsible for your 200rpm quicker spool-up, but it seems it doesn't make any more power overall. If you aren't looking to make big power numbers, then having a "rare" turbo isn't going to net any more ooh and aahs either. Go with something more reliable and easy to repair.

You should be able to hit the same numbers. It moves the same air on the compressor side. The exhaust side is the only difference. The Vf-34 allows for a slightly quicker spool up. Don't forget though, the flat 4 is fairly low sitting compared to an inline 4. Obviously not as low as your's because your car is in general smaller and lower.
