So, what are they like?

Same as a normal interview. Only you take a practical welding test. If you fail, in most cases you don't get the job. Some will work with you if you have a good resume or some similar circumstance.

Was this a serious question, or are you just mocking all of the welding talk going on lately?

I would guess the latter, but I answered anyways.

Do they ever ask trick questions, like "using best welding practices, what's the quickest way to make a BBQ grill out of a barrel that used to hold fuel?"

I've yet to run into it, i'll keep you posted.

When I was a welder it was always fun watching the interviewees come out for their welding test. Most people didn't weld as hot and fast as we did (Amperage at 29 wire speed on full). Can't say I did so great my first time trying to weld that hot either.

I have never welded, but when I play it out in my head, it goes like this:

Hey kid, you any good with that torch?

I'm alright I guess

Oh yeah? Prove it... Make me a jig to fab up a lower control arm for a 1969 Chevelle

Well I cant just do that right away...

Why the hell not...

I need to know your goals and what you are wanting the car to accomplish

I like your style kid, you are thinking beyond the metal. That shows spunk, moxy... We need moxy here. Let me see some of your work.

(shows some work, in a handcrafted welded binder portfolio)

I like your stuff kid, you ever thought about welding professionally?

I've thought about it

Alright, well you give it some thought, and you want to make some money with that MIG set up of yours, you give me a call.

(turns and walks away)

That is what I imagine it is like.

Noone welds with a torch anymore. Unless you're in aviation.

Although TIG welding uses a "torch", but not the same type you're thinking of.

And, there's not much money in making small jigs and whatnot, unless it's for a big company, and the contract is for a shitload of them.

STFU & quit raining on my parade!!

MIG and TIG use a "torch" of sorts, and I even know what the accronyms stand for!! Although, that is where my knowledge of welding ends, but my idea of how the interview goes, stands...

I know TIG is Tungsten Inert Gas, no idea what MIG stands for.

Most often used for spot welding.

I missed the welding threads, and still got a kick out of the initial post.

Metal inert gas :fyi:

Also, going back to your original perception of a welding interview... Change "that MIG welder" to "that stick welder." MIG doesn't pay for shit, unless it's structural applications, where it wouldn't be considered MIG, because there's no gas. Strictly flux cored. But it still uses a gun and wire spool, so most people still call it MIG. n00bs.

Negative, Hoss has watched a lot of spike power block and learned welding info from there. Believe it or not, but there are some bits and pieces of knowledge that I retain.

Please, PLEASE don't believe what you see on powerblock as far as welding goes. They are fucking retards when it comes to welding.

We do not weld in aviation.....almost everything is press riveted together and we get to play with cliko's(sp)

I wouldnt believe anything unless I was physically learning how to do it myself... I picked up a few bits and pieces of knowledge that I retained about the types of welding, but other than that, it is just jargon that I cant comprehend, but I am sure I could if I was actually learning...

I did not think it was still on though I have not had that channel in a while. I never really cared for extreme 4x4 and trucks started pissing me off when they got rid of stacey for that odd looking roided out freak they had on there for a while.
