That way if some jack ass tries to mug or jack me I can shot him in the face with a .410 shotgun shell of shot.

This.
Almost all shotguns now come with threads in the end of the barrel so you can screw chokes in. Barrels come "open". You can buy modified, improved, full, and extra full chokes. Typically use extra full for turkey hunting as it gives you the tightest constriction and allows the shot pattern to stay better on longer shots. You can go too tight though and your shot will start deforming as it leaves the barrel causing lots of "fliers" or shot straying away from the main pattern.
Older shotguns would come with modified barrels, full barrels, etc.

Your is one of the older models that I mentioned are built better. My dad has one thats probably 15 years old and it is built like a rock. The newer ones like I had were built way cheaper. My brother bought one last year for $100 off a guy that needed money bad. His is about as old as yours and it was even built better than mine. My 835 would throw one hell of a pattern. I'm just not a fan of the newer 835s after having so many problems with mine. You can hold a new one and an old one in each hand and shake the guns and tell the new one feels cheaper.
My 835 had a 24" barrel. My 870 has a 23" barrel. Barrel length doesn't make near the difference it used to as far as turkey hunting goes due to today's choke tubes. You can gain a few fps on pellet velocity with longer barrels though.
dont forget the motion activated webcams he puts up in the trees to scout spots.
no, i'm not kidding.
Got me a hell of a trophy last year! had the piebald I killed this year on camera also.

baiting is a pet peeve of mine. I can't stand faggots that do it.
I think baiting turkey should be a hangable offense.

Thinking about picking up a 20 gauge for home defense, will get a pistol for same later. Had a 12 gauge Remington 870 shotgun (still in fl) and it seems a bit much so I am going with the 20 this time around. Mossberg or Remington?
Discuss.
Like the safety location on the Mossberg (heard from a shotgun user that it jams easy there) but liked the build quality of the Remington.

Why you going down to a 20? Are the criminals up there smaller or something?

Shotguns are generally about intimidation. I'm banking on someone hearing me cock the gun and just tapping out. Either way, I know of no thief who is gonna stop and measure the barrel for gauge size. Main reason though is with a 20, I hope to have less chance of blasting off a shot, having it go through the crackhead, through the wall and into one of my kids rooms. The 12 is just so massive of a shell that this is possible. If my kid catches friendly fire, then whats the point of having shot the crook? I might as well just put the bullet through my head at that point...

But....there it is. Gotta plan around the family.
Probably will pick up a handgun down the road, for any close quarter nonsense. With luck, the only place I will use any of it is at the gun range.

I havent shot the 6.8 much yet. I am waiting on optics that I bought just before xmas to show. I plan on using it for deer/hog hunting mostly. The ammo is expensive at about $1 a round. I use the .223/5.56 for playing around.
I absolutely love the Grand Raptor. If I ever get enough scratch together again I wants one. I wanted/needed a smaller frame to "carry" first and foremost.

No more need for hearing protection but it is not "Hollywood" quiet. The .223 suppressed sounds about like my Marlin .22lr. Its really the crack of the bullet hitting super sonic speeds. If you buy or load sub-sonic ammo it makes all the difference so I am told.

its a very nice gun - i thought it was ugly at first, with all the different colors, but it grew on me
the thing i dont like about them is they are so nice & expensive - i hate to carry it because it gets so dirty - i carry my P95 for the daily gun, when it gets dropped on the floor of the truck, im beating up a $300 gun vs. a $1300 gun

Dude, that is a piece of history right there. That looks to be a high standard M-101 . They only made them from the mid 1950's to 1970. If the grips are plastic it's an m-101, if they are wood it is a citation target. Can't really tell from the glare on the picture. It should say "High Standard" on the left hand side of the slide ( the side the picture is taken from )

Ummmmmmmmmmm...NO.
They are not all that complicated to make seeing what goes into them and what materials they are made of. Its all the hassle to own and mfg them that makes them so pricey. Every piece of it, from the threaded ends to the out sleeve are controlled by the BATF. If I ran over it with my car for example and damaged the outer sleeve that the SN# is stamped into then I have to start the entire process over and wait 6 months and buy a new one.

All AR-15 barrels are threaded. I actually had one barrel (.223/5.56) cut down and rethreaded to match the threads on the 6.8spc barrel so that I could use the suppressor on both barrels. Once I purchased the serial numbered suppressor I can use it on any gun I have that it will fit.

I've cycled hundreds of rounds through the winchester, it's reliable enough. I may have been more impressed with the 870 had I not already owned the winchester before buying the remington. I didn't have a single problem with it, it was just kind of cheapy feeling compared to my 1300 IMHO. I sold it back to gander mountain for 40 bucks less than I paid for it and someone else got a good deal on the best shotgun made. I'll keep my 1300.

By range, penetration, accuracy, and lethality an AR wins out on a pistol. Pistols are back up short range. You don't see people going into battle with a hand gun alone.

The 870 holds 4 rounds and 1 in the chamber. That means I have 5 rounds against your 2. Now tell me why law enforcement, military's around the world, and security agencies use the 870 instead of the over/under you pictured.

Wood recommend Glock. I would go to a local indoor gun range (that rents pistols) and try out the different models of Glocks they have. The only thing I'm not real fond of is the lack of safety (besides the trigger guard), and the muzzle flip (I mean... it is plastic...). On the pro side though, I've seen them thrown into the dirt and seen them cycle no problem. They're the AK47 of hand guns.

What does magazine capacity have to do with the quality of a gun regarding it being the best made? Guess that means a mac 10 with a .22 lr conversion must be the shit, cause you can get 250 round magazines for it...
You stated the 870 was the best shotgun made. I stated my opinion as otherwise. There are known durability issues with the 870 express. If you are referring to the police model 870 it is a very good tactical shotgun. Still not the best ever made
By the way
The military and police use a different 870 than the public gets. They went in and fixed the durability issues for them.
Due to heavy recoil in buck and slug loads, all 870 Police guns have a longer
magazine spring which ensures positive feed and function.
A heavier carrier dog spring is used to ensure when the carrier elevates the shell, it will be held there until the bolt can push it into the chamber. This ensures positive feeding when using heavier payload rounds.
The Express model will not allow for the addition of an extension tube without
physical modification to the tube and barrel, which can nullify the warranty.
The Police shotgun barrel is locked down with a "ball detent" system in conjunction with the magazine cap vs. a lesser grade "synthetic magazine spring retainer" lock down as used on the Express system.
Police shotguns use machined ejectors and extractors, as opposed to powdered metal cast which are utilized on the Express models.
But like I said previously. Bring me every Browning citori you find. And we will head to the gun store to pick out your bnib 870 express :)
