Forget posi/limited slip.

Lift a tire - or even unload it by more than about 30-50% of the normal weight it carries, they are as USELESS as an open diff.

Detroit locker.

Oh and make mine a 35 spline for a 60. :)

You do not have a Detroit locker.

I thought limited slip = one tire breaks loose & posi = both tires?

posi=limitedslip=traclock=blah blah

All some form of anti-slip device under different brand names.

They generally have a friction based clutch system in them which detects when one of the two tires on the axle overspeeds. When this occurs, the clutch engages in an attempt to apply power to the tire which has more traction.

In scenarios where traction really matters, these suck.

They also have gear based limited slips which have a series of conical gears. These only suck slightly less.

About the only place a limited slip really helps much more than an open diff is on a slick boat ramp where the two tires on an axle have similar traction.

Yes, a posi is almost a fully welded diff. Both tires spin at the same rate. I have one custom made for my '96 Maxima.

An LSD is a different beast. It usually only does a 75%-25% split. Some good ones will do 60%-40%.

As stated before, posi is the same as LSD. A LSD will allow for a certain difference in movement between the two wheels before automatically locking. In other words, it allows a limited amount of wheel slip before it goes into a locked situation and powers both wheels.

You'e right. I was actually looking at the differences between a 1-way, 1.5 way, and a 2-way. The one on the Maxima was a 2-way. It may have not been ideal for street use, but it gave a solid feel when decelerating.
