View Full Version : How-To: Projects...ITT Water/Light Wall (not the hood)

Well day one of the water/light wall is done. I'm flipping exhausted, dehydrated, a bit tan and sore as a motherfucker.

That being said, i'm pretty happy with the results so far. All items purchased minus the lights and water pump.

The pond is to the correct depth (I just need to lay the sand) and the footers are curing overnight before putting down the main support beam.

Anyways, on to pictures. Kinda boring shit today, just dirt...but it will get there.

Okay bro, I hate to break it to you but some of those plants are dead.

Trimming dead plants is cool but your neighbors hate it. Mine did that in the 'neutral' area and I mowed the fuckers down.

On that note. I look forward to moar pix! Never seen a glass/light pond in the front yard yo!

Can I have one of those bikes? The only thing keeping me from biking to work 5 minutes away via car is the fact that I don't have one.

pl8er
04-24-2009, 09:11 PM
I ripped out those dead ones, that is where the fountain is going...everything else was trimmed down today.

I can't get rid of those bikes, at least not yet.

Cool, this should be fun to watch. I did landscaping for a while in high school, and I loved it. I wouldn't want to do it full time again, but around the house stuff is fun.

Cool. Are you good in landscaping or just doing this project for fun? I'm going to be moving into a small house soon that I'd like to do something with. There are boring shrubs in front.

I do occasionally mulch the front yard and I did install a pre-made fountain about 3 years ago.

Honestly though, my parents gave me a ton of 12X12 glass bricks for free and I just jumped into it. Learning as I go. I'm sure I will bomb something so if you have ANY tips, tricks on the glass laying, let me know. I do have the morter purchased, the panel reinforcements, and the spacers.

Just thought I could figure out the pond, lighting cascading stuff as I do. I have most of the ideas setup for that.

The trek 1000 can be had rather cheap and a GREAT bike IMO. I mean, not ultra light or fast, but totally gets the job done and fun to ride too.

*ponders* did I pay over 400 for this bike.....not sure...nm, they don't sell for less than 400 on ebay, not really sure how much you want to invest in a bike.

I gots to have a bike with lots of gears so I can get to work fast like.

I'm the kinda guy that rolls out of bed, takes shower, and drives to work. That quick.

I bike with good gears would probably add 20 minutes to the trip. First let me figure out how to not be a monkey full of sweat when I show up, and then I will get back to you. lel

How are you doing the water pump? Do a quick draw-up. I'd like to see how you plan on doing this. Some nice projecting LEDs would look good, and have some variating colors on a random timer. That'd be dope.

I know HarborFreight just had a sale on some submersible water pumps. I think they moved a lot of water, I can't remember. I was looking into them but I think they're oil based. (AKA bad for Coral Reefs.)

Going to use a pond pump. Obviously, it has the inlet and then 2 outs (one is a lower pressure and the other is the actual fountain. I'm going to cap the lower pressure one and then split the fountain out to 3 lines. I want one on each side and one middle. What I want is a flow fast enough to have all 3 spots dropping water but slow enough so that the water appears to be adhering to the wall (I don't want a fall, I want a slow steady flow)

pl8er
04-25-2009, 09:54 AM
Also, for the lighting, at least for now, I'm going to use spot lights that I already have and shine through the blocks. I've already spent around 250 on this project.

if you do for some reason change your mind and want to go with leds...for sure check out oznium.com cheap prices, quality items, fast shipping, cheap shipping, its like 4.95 if you buy a .5 resistor or if you buy 10000 leds and 25 underbody kits. the cathodes are bright too, just so ya know.

Not sure if you can make that out...but leveling those things was a nightmare and I was able to hit dead on or real damn close on both axis. Tomorrow I have the top row, reinforced 2X4 support beams on the left and right....lights, sealing the tarp off, laying the rock and running some water into the pond itself. Then to the right I have an entire flower bed and another fountain to work on. Fuck me...being at work is way easier than having time off ;)

One more row (4')...trick will be getting the water to stream down the front without sloshing, we want it to appear like the glass is somewhat fluid too and then the lights shining through that.

So the fourth row is up and the wall is done. Well a small update. We have been working on this when time permits. I am having a hell of a time with the lights! We have purchased 4 solar lights and putting them all in the back makes it bright, but only in the blocks they are pointed at. I can't use hi-powered as my sons room is right above the blocks and it gets too bright for him. We changed out the water and put the pump in. Right now it is running a small fountain, but I will be changing this to just run water down the front. Buying hose tomorrow. Any who, here are some pics...
