View Full Version : polarized vs. non-polarized sunglasses.

I have come to terms with the fact that I need some sunglasses even though I look like a total douche in them. If I am out driving and the sun if in my eyes I get unbearable headaches and the doctor suggested I wear them anyways due to having very sensitive eyes.
Is there really a big difference in polarized and non-polarized glasses? I tried both on in CVS but could not tell much of a difference other than the $10 price difference.
Also any decent brands to go from that are not $100+ but still better than the $10 off the rack shit?
I have debated ordering some online but I would rather make sure they fit and look good instead of wasting time returning them if they suck.
Definitly get polarized. I will never wear unpolarized lenses again.

polarized just removes glare. and cheap polarized get blurry after a few weeks in the sun.

Only other polarized items and tinted glass :fyi:

They also make some things easier to look at/through, and that glare removal deal is AWESOME!! It is a night and day difference to use regular glass vs polarized glass.

polarized is the best for fishing otherwise the glare makes it impossible to see in the water

I don't buy polarized because I just end up screwing up or losing whatever I buy.
Oakley has some plastic frames that are under a hundred and are durable.

Never thought of this but I can see how it would help..
So are there any good brands to recommend or is there really no difference in a $20 pair and a $150 pair?
I rock oakleys and nothing else, but it is all personal preference.

Yeah, there are differences. First, a "real" pair is going to be more comfortable. Every cheap pair that I have ever owned was uncomfortable in one way or another. Second, the cheap pair will not last. You are wasting your money IMO. Finally, there is a difference in the quality of the lenses (even if you don't go polarized there is a difference).
I think Oakley is a good compromise between cost and quality. I have owned more expensive brands (I really like Maui Jim) but I am happy enough with a pair of Oakley's that I hope will make it a year or so without me losing.

I have a pair of Oak's that are over 10 years old. If you take care of them, they last a life time.

Yeah, they are good quality. I had gone away from them in part because the rednecks like them so much, but then the price to quality ratio brought me back. The last 4 pairs or so have been Oakleys.
I has two pairs of juliets, one polarized, one not, and one pair of wardens. I want a new pair now hehe.

I rock a $5 pair of element8 riding glasses....they are very comfortable and claim to be polarized.....They don't seem to be, and I could care less. I have had them for over 1 year now and for $5 I will go back and get another.
I will never spend anything over $25 on sunglasses. because I will lose them and then have to buy another $25 pair; at which point I could have bought 10 pair of the others:loco:

I don't invest in sunglasses. I found that the more I spent on them, the faster I lost or broke them.
Seems lilke sold $10 glasses last forever.

I just got a pair of polarized after my free pair from a marathon broke. I do like these better although I can see weird shit in my helmet as the polarized reflects it back. As mentioned, black looks weird and so do windows and OLED (cd player screens etc)

Weird shit as in reflections of your hair and pads? Or weird shit as in lines and whatnot across your visor?
If you are seeing lines and circles across the visor, or if it seems darker than previously, then take those glasses off... Your visor could already be polarized, and the combo of the two glasses is creating distortion.
Back windows of cars do it too... They look like they have a grid on them.

i went from a 50 dollar pair of polarized glasses to a $150 pair of non-polarized ray bans. can't say i've noticed a difference in their effectiveness in the sun... polarized lenses only seem necessary if you fish or snowboard/ski...
You also went from a pair of $50 "polarized" opticals to some decent non-polarized optics...
