View Full Version : How-To: Getting invites to What.cd

I have received a lot of questions asking "How can I get into What?" or "Can you invite me to What?" In the past, I have told you to make friends with others who may have invites available (I certainly don't have enough to get everyone in).

But there is a very easy way for you to get into What.cd, and it simply requires that you have some knowledge of transcodes and general "best practices" on private torrent sites. But first....

What.cd is a private ratio-based site; you MUST share back what you download.

Now, on to the fun. What.cd has an interview process in place that allows you to interview to be a user on What.cd. The interview process is very simple: they will give you a number of questions asking you to identify when an album has been transcoded (ie. re-encoded from a lossy source), and will ask you some simple questions about selling invites, uploading torrents, etc.

To get the interview started, you must download and install an IRC client. mIRC is the most popular one (google it).

Once installed and a nickname has been chosen, type /server irc.what.cd

Now join the invites channel, type /join #what.cd-invites

Once you have joined, it is critical that you read the topic (the message at the top of the channel). It will give you instructions on how to join the interview queue (note that a speedtest.net proof is required) and there is also a link where you can read about the types of questions that will be asked (as well as some of the answers you'll need).

It is a simple, straight-forward process. If, however, you lack the requisite knowledge and choose to not learn what is needed, you will not be invited. Be patient and diligent, and you can be a member in a snap. With that said, good luck to those who need it and ask a question here if something is unclear.

Note: You will be asked where you heard about the interview process. Say you heard of it from a friend or google or something like that.

the dude wouldnt even tell me what i got wrong.

i have a feeling it was the question about putting these in order from best to worst sound quality

flac, v0, v2, 320, 160

first i put
flac, 320, v0, v2, than 160.

then i changed it to
flac, v0, v2, 320, 160

i mean, on the site it says v0's target bitrange is 245+ and v2 is 190+....so youd think it would be worse sound quality than the 320, but then on that very own site it says right after the 320 cbr info, that "there is an even better way to encode" and it starts to talk about v0 an v2. so what the hell is it?

either way, i couldnt pass part 1 of 4 of the interview all three times. lulz

I just was not sure how they compare, if it is close and easier to obtain that may be the way to go for me at least.

While we are on the subject I listen to probably 90% old school hip-hop from the 80's-mid 90's. I have a pretty good selection now but would take them all in higher quality if they were available.

Do you think I will have difficulty finding stuff I listen to. I only because I know rap is seen as shit by a lot of audiophiles so it may not be stuff that is very common in that type of community.

A better quality of the music meaning you get CD quality instead of cassette or whatever is comparable to 192k and less.

I figure if I have the space I would not mind the best, same thing with movies I have a shitload downloaded but when the drives prices come down to a level in my price range I will start working on upgrading those probably.

I use Waffles and What.cd heavily, although it's much easier building ratio on Waffles. I like What's interface better.

I don't know how much rap they'd have, never looked...I wouldn't expect much on FLAC, but maybe MP3...

That is actually really funny. You're not new to the internet, are you?

The interview process is to give people who don't have connections a chance to get into the site. Instead of flooding the site with retards, they screen prospective members to make sure that the site is not negatively impacted by the new users. Again, the interviews are only for people who can't get invites, as the inviter is responsible for the invitee.

What.cd has more music in better quality available sooner.

Waffles is fine, but you have to get an invite, and I'm not giving any of mine away.

Not new at all. In fact I am so old at this internet shit that knowing a site that does BS like this has a fan base with heads equal or larger to yours that I don't care to associate with. The majority will be stuck up elites with no sense of humor. Egoist heaven.

I really don't see what ego's have to do with it. I go to these sites to get music, not to fraternize. What we're talking about is having people that can upload good, reliable rips and follow site rules that prevent things like transcoding and duplication. That's it.

It is. But my perspective on the internet is a "free-for-all", not an organized set of "you're cool to enter" rules. I highly doubt this or any other site has music I cannot acquire elsewhere. The issue for me is not cost, but portability. I want music I can play on multiple platforms...If I could buy lossless music on web, I would.

whats so different about "stealing" vs "buying used"?

stealing: artist gets no money

buying used: artist still gets no money, since i bought it from X and X.

seems buying used is even worse since a random dude is now making his money BACK on the album, which is pretty similar to stealing

Property can be re-sold. It is up to the seller to release all rights to it, which means getting rid of any copies.

As long as somewhere along the lines that official copy was paid for and no other copies remain except for the current owner, it is a lot different than just plain theft of digital copies.

I am not going to argue whether anyone should be doing it. I just hate when people justify this activity.

of course property can be resold but that really only refers to the cd, and not whats on it. you dont have any rights to that. just like owning a copy of windows xp doesn't mean you own whats on that disc just the disc that its on.

all i was saying, is that i got a copy of the latest *put randon singers name here* and i didnt pay the record label shit nor the artist. but i did pay Joe Nobody down the corner for it.

so two people, or maybe ill sell my copy to make it three, have now heard and enjoyed the music and havnt paid their share of the money to the record label or artist for producing it.

i wasnt justifying it, i just happened to think of this as i was reading over this thread and figured "hmm, lets see if i can sell this".

i of course will continue to download all i can. if the internet would be gone tomorrow, i still wouldnt buy a single copy of a cd unless it was used like flippy does, or was actually worth the money they charge for it. i remember when dr dre's last cd came out...i bought that shit for $20....for a fucking cd that wasnt even all that great. i was young so what do you expect. thats the last time i got boned for a cd. every other one that ive bought has been thoroughly investigated for "cost vs quality" before i get hosed again. can you guess how many ive bought since then? not very many.

im not spending a couple days worth of gas just to possibly have a cd that will end up sitting in my car under the rear seat, all forgotten about, cause it sucks fucking ass.

The point is that the copy was purchased at some point and the artists were paid. If the seller destroys all their copies upon sale then that copy is still legit and paid for. Your argument is weak semantics. DL digital copies NEVER pays anyone. When you buy a CD, you do own the content on it to the extent that you can transfer or sell your rights to use it. Same with software. You can resell your retail version of XP. Just as long as you release and discontinue the use of that key for yourself.

Nope. Because you are distributing at that point to multiple. You can gift away the CD or a single copy technically and throw away the original, but you are distributing more than 1 copy according to your example. So no.
