Yeah, this is my first quarter, we are switching to semesters in the fall, summer quarter is going to blow hard, 10 weeks of classwork in 8 weeks time. Current classes are cake stuff that are needed for my degree in Business Management. "Hardest" class I'm taking right now is MTH111, and I have a 97% so far.

I'm probably going to take my credits to Franklin after I'm done at Zane State, since all of my credits will transfer towards a 4 year degree, most likely in Marketing.

And on a brighter note, the ankle isn't nearly as bad today, soaking it in alternated hot/cold water, ibuprofen, and stretching it helped a ton. Beer thirty may be in order.

I took that online and never studied and aced it, easy class is easy.

Business Math. Next quarter is Technical Writing, Principals of Business Management, and Accounting I. Summer Quarter isn't decided yet, but will probably be something like Public Speaking and Marketing, and then the third class, we'll see. I know that the only options for Microeconomics and Macroeconmics in the summer quarter are online-only. I'm not going to take them until the fall semester starts.

Beer is happening tonight for sure. Last night I fell asleep on the couch, I guess the lack of sleep from the night before caught up to me. Glad my alarm for school on my phone was on, else I wouldn't have woke up :P

Pics, I promise them.

It's quirky. It is darker than a standard amber in my book, and it's not as hoppy as most ambers I've had, but this beer is good. Almost has a barleywine-lite kind of flavor to it. It has a slight fruitiness up front that turns to a toasty, caramel sweetness and a slightly bitter earthy hop and a long, sweet finish. This is very, very solid.

Might drink the Ruthless later.

Angel, I feel for you bro. I'm going to hate my life next quarter most likely, unless accounting isn't as bad as it seems.

Sierra Nevada Ruthless Rye. Smells like Citra, kinda piney and tropical fruit, and tastes like Torpedo with a rye spiciness and a bit more bitterness. Very good for a rye IPA.

A U-Haul store should have them, or could get them in for you. Those are sweet, I'm going to have to buy a couple of those, so I'll be able to ship some stuff out. I'll have to throw some extra padding in for the smaller format bottles, but that's okay.

I've had Sapporo, not Kirin. Sapporo was like Bud Light but fuller bodied and not as grainy.

Usually with Italian beers, the brewery is called Birra. I had a beer from Birra Del Borgo that was a collaboration with Cantillon, and it's one of the best sours I've had so far.

hoss
02-20-2012, 11:08 PM
It's not a huge beer, which may have been what you were expecting? Just a nice easy drinking pale ale.

Stone's pale ale is WAY more huger than yellow tale, which a lot of people percieve as better. And it is a better pale ale IMO, but it is a different beast altogether.

brynm
02-20-2012, 11:54 PM
could be part of it, I'd like to try it out of a bottle because it was by no means bad. I find that a lot of the draft beers I've tried never live up to the same brew coming from a bottle. Could be a psychological thing. And the Stone tasted very much like what most of the Canadian craft breweries are marketing as an IPA. Would have liked to try the Ballast Point Ipa , but they had just ran out.

It could also be age, IPA's don't last for very long, and if that keg was just a few months old, if could have changed its flavors.

I don't want to sound like I am making excuses for that beer, because I will agree with you that it is not an overwhelmingly great pale ale, but it is a pretty damn good pale ale.

Was it the ballast point sculpin that you missed out on? If so, you missed out on a fucking good one....

Indeed it is, but Raftman is Canada only in that format. We only get the 12oz bottles RARELY in the 4 bottle taster packs. They aren't available very often.

I've got a 12oz of LFDM in the fridge, will probably drink it tonight.

And brynm, there's way too many good beers available in Cali. Old Guardian from Stone should be available, and I suggest picking up at least 2, one to drink now, and one to age. It's FANTASTIC with even 1 year, and the 2009 that I had a few months back with a friend was ridiculously good.

How do you go about aging beer....was gonna pick up some of the Old Guardian. Just in a cool closet or something?

Best way to do it so it won't oxidize is to keep it at 55 degrees or colder, and wax the cap so the seal between the cap and the bottle is completely sealed. Oxygen is the biggest enemy to beer once it's bottled. Also, keep it out of sunlight and UV light at all costs.

Old Guardian is fucking tasty, a friend of mine has a 2008-2011 vertical of it, and I'm waiting for an invite to drink it. I'm sure it won't be long :P

hoss
02-23-2012, 03:01 PM
Keep it in a dark and cool place. Try your absolute best to keep it at or below 67 degrees, but not too cold. You could keep it in the fridge, but I would advise against that since at those temps it will slow down most of the flavor shifts that you would normally get from aging.

Nice! :hi5:

Hossy, 60 or under is cellar temp.

From http://beeradvocate.com/beer/101/store:

We recommend that you store your beer in a cool area, away from direct light, sources of heat and in a constant temperature environment. Speaking of which, temperature is very important, and a major factor in the storing and serving aspects of beer. It also can become a real balancing act. Beer benefits from cool constant temperatures; usually around 50-55 degrees F is ideal for most beers, and most beer collectors. Higher temperatures and you'll risk shortening the lifespan of your beer, lower and you'll induce chill haze (cloudy). For you beer geeks out there, we'll break it down a bit further ...

There are 3 storage temperatures used to lay beer down for maturation and/or storage. Not only will you want store your beers at these specific temperatures, but also you'll want to serve them at the same. Your strong beers (like barleywines, tripels, dark ales) will be their happiest at room temperature (55-60F), most of your standard ales (like bitters, IPAs, dobbelbocks, lambics, stouts, etc) will be at cellar temperature (50-55F) and your lighter beers (like lagers, pilsners, wheat beers, milds, etc) will be at a refrigerated temperature (45-50F). Usually the higher alcohol, the higher temperature and lower alcohol, the lower temperature ... you get the point.

Obviously it'll be near impossible to regulate some of the above temperatures, unless you have a second fridge for beer or a cool basement. A compromise is to at least store those beers that are ideal at slightly higher temperature in a closet, away from light and environmental changes, or stay within the 50-55F range. As you get into beer cellaring, you'll probably see many variations of these recommended temperatures, but ours are good averages to go by.

Cheers.

Stone Levitation is fucking noms and hard to believe it's under 5%, I won't try the Wells on principal, 90 minute is good when it's fresh, and Midas Touch is odd.

Even though I am sick, today involved me drinking a Sam Adams Griffon's Bow, a 2010 New Holland Charkoota Rye, a 2009 Drie Fonteinen Oude Geuze, and 3 different homebrews from my friend Paul, an English mild brown, a hazlenut version of said brown, and an American stout.

Griffon was fucking odd, blonde barleywine aged in oak and with Nelson Sauvin hops, the Oude Geuze was great, super sour and acidic, and the Charkoota was AMAZING. Smoked dopplebock ftw.

No surprise there, most of the festivals are nothing more than dick waving from the breweries.

Fwiw, most people don't go to festivals to find poundable, lower alcohol brews.

Angel, one IPA doesn't mean you don't like them, you may not like that brewpubs' take on the IPA. I'd suggest trying a couple English IPA's first, as English IPA's are much less bitter than American IPA's. Goose Island's IPA is one of the better examples.

Haven't seen either. Had a Tower 10 from Karl Strauss brewing tonight, I liked it even though it only had mediocre reviews on beeradvocate.
Never trust the reviews on beer advocate... That place is full of dickface snobs who think their shit doesn't stink and that their opinion is the bottom line...

If I want to know about a beer I will go there to get some flavor descriptions, but I will completely ignore their opinions about the beers.

The Bruery Saison Rue, Jolly Pumpkin Oro De Calabaza, New Belgium Abbey Dubbel, and Sixpoint Resin. Jackie O's has a release on the 24th, going to be heading there with a Life and Limb. They are re-releasing Kentucky Monk. Triple aged in bourbon barrels = one of their best beers.

Was pretty good, but wasn't so much of a sweet stout as I was told. Was very drinkable though.

http://www.bunitedint.com/media/resources/tap_stickers/hitachino_sweet_round.jpg

Body was rather thin for a stout, but overall very drinkable and among the top of my favorite lactose stouts.

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/__nAd50xTIYs/R6tExb5DJNI/AAAAAAAAASo/VEd4rDiJWUc/s400/black_20albert.jpg

Was by far my favorite of the 3. Great drinkability, even though it is super heavy, that hid the alcohol content perfectly. Bits of chocolately stoutness with hints of oranges.

We held a light up to it and it was completely opaque with lots of sediment. Only thing suck about this beer, was the $16 price tag on it :(

6th Anniversary mini snifter, logo tulip, Baklava Braggot, and 2 Kentucky Monk.

Got to try a shitload of good beers, Labyrinth, Mother Funker, Heady Topper, Troegs Scratch 58 (which wasn't available to go ;) ), Black Tuesday, Bourbon Barrel Cuir, Upland Persimmon, a couple Blind Pirate beers (one of which hoss would love, amber ale with Zythos, Galaxy, and Sorachi Ace), Cascade Sang Royal, 9 day old Pliny The Elder, Jackie O's Stoutella (Chocolate Hazlenut stout), Jackie O's Single Hop Columbus (3.5% ABV and tasted like Torpedo minus the Citra), Jackie O's Vanilla Bean Rum Barrel Dark Apparition, Jackie O's Dark Apparition Nano Raisin (5 gallon Bourbon Barrel with DA, raisins, and chiles), Jackie O's Dark Apparition Nano ICE (3 gallon bourbon barrel with previously bourbon barreled Dark Apparition and then freeze distilled, definitely huge ABV, but drank like regular BBDA), a German Kolsch that I can't remember the name of, and probably 15 other beers that are slipping my mind right now. Still has 2 oz each of Amarillo and Simcoe for dry hop. Going to sit 14 days on primary and then 7 days on the dry hops. Pretty happy with the malt character, it's very light on the malt. IBU/SG of .996 :)

Cappuccino is good. Surly Furious is delicious. Dark Lord is too syrupy sweet in it's regular iteration, so I don't know how adding vanilla bean would make it any better.

I have bro, but for me to enjoy Dark Lord, it'd have to be a completely different base beer. I can't stand regular Dark Lord, it's so syrupy sweet and boozy that I don't understand the love it gets. Same thing with Black Tuesday from The Bruery, tried it at Jackie O's, and honestly, it tastes like chocolate, roast, and everclear mixed together. Just not appealing to me.

For an example though, Jackie O's has Dark Apparition, their Russian Imperial Stout. There is a Rum Barrel Vanilla Bean variant that was fantastic in the bottle, but it was TERRIBLE on draft. The batch on tap tasted like rum cake covered in butter. Vanilla didn't make it better. I don't think it would make me want to drink Dark Lord anymore than I do.

So I made a comment on Beer Advocate in the Beer Haul thread, my friend Mike (InebriatedJoker) posted a picture of his most recent trade box that he'd received and one of the beers was the Russian River Beatification. I quoted the picture and said "You are bringing that to my bachelor party, right?" The Cali BA that sent that box to Mike sent me a message and asked me for a list of stuff that we were opening for the party, and asked for my address so he could send me an unsolicited box of beers. I'm in awe of his generosity. I'm going to take him a growler and some of my homebrew to the next Jackie O's release in exchange.

My friend Travis is bringing a bottle of Green Flash Palate Wrecker DIPA. Can't wait to try it, heard it's pretty vicious bitter.

What styles do you like normally? Here's a list of stuff that we get in Ohio that you don't get in Indiana:

21st Amendment
AleSmith
Anderson Valley
Arcadia
Atlantic Brewing
Avery
Ballast Point
Bear Republic
Brew Kettle
Buckeye
City Brewery
Columbus
D.L. Geary's
Dogfish Head
Epic (Utah)
Fort Collins
Full Sail
Gordon Biersch
Green Flash
Hook & Ladder
Hudepohl (Christian Moerlein brand)
Ithaca
Lagunitas
Lake Placid
Laughing Dog
Lexington (Alltech/Kentucky)
Lion Brewery
Mt Carmel
O'Fallon
Otter Creek
Smuttynose
Speakeasy
Stillwater
Summit
Tallgrass
Troegs
Weyerbacher
Wooden Shoe

Some of those do not do bottles or distribute far, so some of them we don't get in this part of the state. We get Columbus though. Their IPA is my favorite IPA that I've had, and their summer seasonal, Summer Teeth, is out right now. It's a fantastic Kolsch.

And Three Floyds has two beers that blow everything else they make away: Gumballhead and Zombie Dust. Nothing else, IMO, comes close. If you don't try those, you owe it to yourself to do so.

I'll be able to do that, but just know that Breakfast Stout is so much better when it's a fresh batch, and by this point, it's a couple months old. It's not that it'll be bad, it's just the coffee flavor is so much stronger when it's fresh. I've got a couple things in mind that I can send.

And to ship with, wrap the bottle in bubble wrap, a couple layers thick. Then fill the void of the box with thick paper and packing peanuts, if you have them, and extra bubble wrap. Also, you may want to put the bottle into a thicker plastic bag so that if it does break, the liquid will be inside the bag instead of seeping through the box. The box Kurtis sent me from Santa Clara was packing peanuts and some bubble wrap on the bottom, then the plastic bag in the middle, each individual bottle wrapped in about 2 layers of bubble wrap, then bubble wrap and loosely packed thick paper on top. It was nicely done, and they got here without issue.

I'd ship FedEx, but that's just what I've seen works best with shipping beers.

I don't mind being surprised...I can ship it at work, we have plenty of bubble wrap and other stuff.

You could certainly use one of those, you just wouldn't want to ship it by itself, you'd want a shipper inside of a box filled with bubble wrap or peanuts or something else. Beer is precious cargo, bro :P

Thanks a ton man. I'm going to go out to Winerak on Sunday and see how old the Breakfast Stout there is. If it comes down to it, I'll make Chad order a fresh case :P

And also congrats to Grand Rapids MI for their awesome showing and first place tie on their first year in the voting. For anyone that doesn't know, GR is host to tons of great breweries.

because people voted for it... Not sure if that was a srs question or not... Asheville has a HUGE craft beer scene, and tons of breweries nestled in it... SN, NB, and OB are just a few of the first big guys to make a move there. They didn't choose western NC just because.

Sorta srs. I don't know how Asheville could be any better of a beer city than Portland or Grand Rapids. Seriously, GR is an incredible beer city. Hopcat alone makes it worthwhile to travel there.

Edit: So is Philly. Holy shit do they have a beer scene.

Asheville has more breweries overall than GR, and IMO better places to drink beer than GR.

This is the fourth year that they have held the beer city vote, and the third time Asheville has won. If Asheville isn't on your radar yet, you have been in a cave... There are tons of incredible breweries in western NC.

Greenman

Also, next homebrew, melon porter.

You saw it here first. I don't know of a single other one, ever seen it, but damn it is a killer combo... I first realized it smoking some melon shisha and drinking some porter, chocolate, melon, NOMZ.

Hell or High Watermelon*

And no, I'm not. That beer is only better than the Mango Wheat from Weasel Boy, which I'm convinced is actually worse than Natty Light. Seriously, I'd rather drink Natty Light than drink their Mango Wheat, it's that terrible.

Edit: And that's coming from their biggest fanboy.

Hell or high watermelon has to be taken for what it is, and that is NOT as a mindblowing beer...

I was dissapointed with it at first. But on my second and third visit to it, its not a horrible wheat. It's actually pretty nice, light, and refreshing. But you have to take a step back as a beer nerd (and I only say that because that is what it took for me to appreciate it...). On a hot summer day, in the dead of summer, when you just want something light and refreshing, it's pretty damn good.

That being said, and all of that aside....

I'm not using watermelon in my porter. Not even gonna me similar to that...

Honeydew and cantaloupe. Soft melon flavor, to blend with light chocolate notes. Melon sweetness, added to a light and dry beer...

I'm a little pumped about it. Mostly because I have NEVER heard of another one similar to it.

The idea came from one night when the gf and I were drinking a phenomenal porter, nice and light, mildly acidic, bright chocolate notes, and smoking a nice melon porter. The two just blended nicely. The beer might need a touch of smoke to bring it all together, but in the end I think it's gonna be the bomb.

Woot I forgot to respond to you.. I'm a no0b to this. I'm not a fan of super heavy or dark brews. It has to be a taste good but sit light for me to be a fan. Hell I'll finish just about anything, but for me to continue drinking it I've got to really like it.
