Looking for some new stuff to try. Most recent was Stone's Levitation Ale, which was pretty good minus a shitty hop aftertaste. Too much bitterness on the finish, otherwise a tasty brew.
Favorites are probably Bell's Amber Ale and Shiner Blonde, as well as Weasel Boy's Brown Stoat Stout and Plaid Ferret Scottish Ale, both are up there. He (Jay Wince, brewmaster from Weasel Boy) had a limited edition Imperial Black IPA that was dynamite, but it's tapped out for the year. Looking forward to his porter and his Marzen.
Anyone got any suggestions?

Delirium Nocturnum, if you happen to like sweet beers I'd recommend Lazy Magnolia's Pecan ale, tastes like pralines. Uhh....I'll have to get back to you with more.

Shit man, I'm just surprised someone is actually awake, it's like 5 am here.
The Delirium, what style beer is it? The Pecan sounds good, but I don't know if I'll be able to find it here.
If you want to try something good, try that Levitation Ale. If you like any kind of pale ale, it's crazy good, and even with my dislike of bitter finishes, it's still one of my top 5 beers. The complexity on it is worth drinking it. Helps that it's only 4.4 ABV.

It's a dark heavier beer, and I find that it goes down rather smooth.
I happen to dislike sweet beers, but thoroughly enjoyed the Pecan.
I've actually heard of it, a local bar over here typically carries over 250 different brews, and that was one that I've been told to try. I'll have to check it out next time I go out.

Young's Double Chocolate Stout.
Brooklyn Brewery also makes a Double Chocolate that's a little cheaper and almost as good, seems easier to find, too.

If I wanted a heavy stout, I'd go to Weasel Boy and get his Anastasia Russian Imperial, it's stupid good.
I'm a wheat/amber/blonde fan more than anything else, but I'll try stuff once, more than once if it's actually worth a shit.
Best recent beer was Weasel Boy's Bitter Sable, it's an Imperial Black IPA. Talk about a dark beer, pours as dark as cola, tastes like a good coffee/oatmeal stout mixed with a decent IPA, like Dogfish Head 60 Minute. It's a crazy combo, but it works well. The roasted malts in it are in frickin credible.

A good one if you like English Pales, like Bass, is the Rising Moon Spring Ale. Yes, it's not really a craft beer, but if you were to take Blue Moon and mix it with the malty flavor of Bass, Rising is exactly what you'd get. Tried it, not too shabby for what it is.
Helps that it's farking cheap and easy to find.
I think I'm going to make a trip up to the Winerak on Saturday and see what's new.
Almost forgot, I know that it's probably not being stocked currently, but if you find a beer from Great Lakes Brewing Company called Conway's Irish Ale, I suggest trying it. Meat and Potatoes kind of beer. Very, VERY good.

mickeys 40oz.
a delicate tasty malt liquor, with a slight hint of paper bag, and an even bigger slap in the face of pure nignog flavor that just sits in the back of the throat. the "green" thunder goes great with a blunt, and some fried chicken.

Be on the lookout for Flying Dog's Dogtoberfest Marzen. If any of you can find it, pick up a 6. Best Marzen on the market, IMO.
Also, the Samuel Adams Imperial Double Bock is mighty good too, 9.5% ABV as well, nice super strong malt flavor with a touch of alcohol, not as hoppy as most Adams stuff. Kinda pricey but worth every penny.
Goose Island Harvest Ale is good as well. Next on my list is probably Great Lakes Brewing Company's Glockenspiel, it's a weizenbock. I'll let you all know how that one goes :)

Breck brewery 471 small batch double IPA
Red Hook double chocolate stout
Flyind god imperial stout
Brooklyn brewery double chocolate
Those are some good starts. The 471 is one of my faves, I love the fall/winter because of these HUGE stouts and imperial IPA's that come out.
Oh, and I do not recomend the IPA's be drunk while eating food. They are strong and IMO overpower most all foods. The stouts pair excellently with beef(ribeye ;) ) and chocolate. Yes, chocolate, especially dark chocolate.

in wichita, there were a couple different liquor stores that sold single bottles of beer.
they had the empty six pack cartons in buckets at each end of the isle and you could mix & match and make your own six pack
i thought it was a good idea because you could try whatever you wanted and only had to buy 1 bottle of each kind

They have that on some of the stuff at Winerak. If say a couple bottles break, they'll put them in a shopping cart near the front of the store that has discounted prices on each bottle, and you can mix and match out of that shopping cart for 6.99. Most of the time, the beer in there sucks.
Picking up 2 things this week. Picking up the Great Lakes Brewing Company's Glockenspiel and probably will go down to Weasel Boy and fill my growler, with what, I don't know.
How about a poll:
What should I fill my growler with?
1.Feisty Fisher Amber Ale
2.Blackfooted Porter
3.Plaid Ferret Scottish Ale
4. Their guest tap, which is Ommegang Hennepin
Thoughts?

I tried a pint of the Amber while I was at Weasel Boy, it was decent. His Black IPA is back on tap, which is really good. The Hennepin was gone, replaced by Avery Karma. I didn't try it.
I didn't end up getting that Glockenspiel either. I got a 6 of the Atwater Block Voodoovator, which is a doppelbock. It was pretty good.
Next time I head to Weasel Boy, his Supergenius is going to be done and on tap, and I can't wait for it. Had it last year, it's a Barleywine. 10.5% and very sweet malt. Hops aren't super strong in it, which makes it very deceptive. Jay's description of it is "The more you drink, the smarter you think you are". That's about accurate too :)

Okay, this is from their website:
A twist on a classic! A big and bold Imperial IPA with some dark malt character to throw an iron in the flavor fire!
To be perfectly honest, take a good old American IPA, add in a plain English Stout's body, and some dark roasted malt, as said in the description. It's REALLY, REALLY complex. The best part is the fact that it's, IIRC, 9.5% alcohol, it's potent.
If you wanted to pay for the shipping and the price of the growler, I could get you one ;)

It's not really a craft, but I tried the Michelob Winter's Bourbon Cask Ale, and it's fucking horrible. It tastes like that old time red cough syrup that leaves that "ack" aftertaste in the back of your throat.
The next one I'm trying is the 250th Anniversary Stout by Guiness. I know it's a macro too, but it's a limited brew so I figure I'll give it a shot. Weasel Boy released their Snow Ermine Holiday Ale two days ago, and I've yet to be down there to try it. It's up there on my list to try.

Tried 3 new ones thanks to our Matesich Distributing sales rep.
First was Goose Island Honker's Ale, tastes like a hoppier version of Bass Pale Ale. Very nice malt body and some hops to balance it.
Second was Goose Island Christmas Ale, and it was a 1 year old bottle (bottle date was 10/24/08. Very nice as well.
Third was Red Hook Long Hammer IPA. Amazing, I found an IPA I can drink. Not bad at all.

The Stone Vertical Epic 09/09/09 is a Belgian Strong Dark Ale style. Supposedly really good, and 7.99 for a 22 oz. Same style as Trappistes Rochefort 8.
I'm going to be trying all the porters I can after having a pint of the Blackfooted Porter down at Weasel Boy. It's makes my mouth water.

If you think the Old Scratch is good, try their Dogtoberfest when it comes back around. It's amazing. The Horn Dog Barleywine is good too.
I tried Goose Island's Matilda tonight out of a 375ml bottle. It's a strong Belgian pale ale (name is weird, since it's only 7% alcohol), but it's very different. It's re-fermented with brettanomyces, which most brewmasters despise and try so very hard to keep out of their beer. In certain beers, it's supposed to help flavors, in others it destroys them. In this case, it helps. The flavors in it were hard to describe, but I got ripe apple, a little banana, clove, so very little bready malt, and then the funk from the brett. It was weird, but not weird enough to destroy the complexity behind it.
It's the first intentional brett-infected beer I've had, and to be honest, I'll try another if given the chance.

Lambics are fruit based. The Matilda is not. It's a Belgian Pale Ale, but re-fermented with brett.
Old Scratch isn't that bad, nor is it good. I think it's mediocre. Joe, correct me if I'm wrong, but you are from Cincinnati? If you can get any of Bell's stuff down there (which I assume you can since we get it here in Zanesville), try their Amber Ale. It's superb. So is their Pale Ale.
Next one on my list is EKU 28, which is a German Doppelbock. 11.2% ABV. Supposedly rediculously good. 13.99 for a 6. Going to go pick it up tomorrow before work and then after work I'm going to partake in a few.

I've got one bottle of Leffe Blonde in the cabinet, it's pretty decent when it's room temp, it's shit cold though.

Leffe is poo unfortunately. Company got wrecked when InterBrew bought them out, just like everything else they buy. Did have some in draft a number of years ago - found it to have a very heavy bubble gum ester.
Just another Abbey wannabe.

They have it up at Winerak, I'll have to try it out.
The Leffe isn't THAT bad. I'd put anything that BMC makes far below Leffe. At least it's got SOME flavor.
Tonight was Bell's Amber Ale, it's back in stock at Winerak, and for 9.99, I think it's a steal. Perfect balance of hops and caramel malt, IMO. It's so easy to drink, it's not even funny.
Next one is Ommegang Hennepin, there's a single 4 pack sitting up there on the shelves waiting to be bought. After that, I think it's going to be Unibroue's Trois Pistoles.

You like tripels, I'm sure you could get into Belgian Pales and whatnot, like Delerium and some others. Have you ever had any American "Belgians"? The Goose Island Matilda is excellent, it's a Belgian Pale, and it's refermented with brettanomyces. It's very different though. Best Belgian I've had yet was the Hennepin, Belgian Saison style. Great beer.
Our local shop has a Stone Vertical Epic 08.08.08 sitting in the coolers, it's a Belgian DIPA. Also has a bunch of other stuff I want to try.
Deerhunt: Yes, I am a fan of beer. Any time you want to try something worthwhile, give me a shout. I bet I could find something that even your Natty Light drinking ass could like :)

I tried Shiner Blonde last August. Loved it. My favorite beer is some $12 6 pack stuff I bought for the hell of it. It claimed it was Germany's oldest brewery or something. Think It started with a "W" ? You may know what I am talking about. it was amazing.

Good beer. The Hopslam is worth the price though. Amazing beer. If you haven't tried it, do so. You'll be amazed.
To grassroots, have you tried the Goose Island Matilda or Pere Jaques? Both are good beers. We can get a lot of those ones you have tried at Winerak. Have you had La Fin Du Monde from Unibroue? Looks like you've tried a couple of their brews (I see a couple bottles past the Delerium that look like Unibroue products).
I just got done trying a 6 pack of the Sam Adams Brewer's Collection. The Coastal Wheat is absolutely fucking horrible. The Irish Red isn't too shabby (I'll gladly take a Conway's Irish Red over it) and the Black Lager isn't too bad.

The Raging Bitch is a really nice beer, if you like Belgian beers. The Lagunitas is amazing. First product of theirs I've tried, and it's worth the money I paid. Lol. That's probably a pretty epic beer right there.
Tonight I tried Ommegang Rare Vos. Very similar to their Hennepin, but it was more dark fruits and malt than the Hennepin.
Tried the Victory HopDevil as well. It's a fucking letdown, from a cool looking package:
http://beermagnets.com/images/500x200HD.jpg
It wasn't hoppy at all. With a name like HopDevil, I expected hops. I got a little spicy hop and some caramel malt and bready malt. That's it. No bitter, no citrus, no piney, no nothing. It's like they forgot the hops in my batch.
Kef
I ate dinner at the victory brewery last night, I was trying only the beers that I know I cant get at home. They were not super exciting...
I did get a pretty badass looking growler from them though. Goign to Troegs brewery this morning.

Lucky bastard. Here's my stash for tonight, picked it up earlier at Beverage Source in Newark:
750ml La Fin Du Monde
6 pack of Dark Horse Crooked Tree IPA
a "create a 6 pack" consisting of:
1 Dogfish Head 60 Minute IPA
1 Founders Centennial IPA
1 Bell's Hopslam DIPA
1 Bell's Oberon Wheat Ale
1 Great Lakes Brewing Company Holy Moses White Ale
1 Troegs HopBack Amber Ale
Also got 2 Bell's Oberon Summer 2010 pint glasses, all for 36 bucks with tax.
Not too shabby, me thinks. Pics will be up in a bit along with my thoughts on them.
Kef
1 Founders Centennial IPA
1 Bell's Hopslam DIPA
1 Troegs HopBack Amber Ale
I had the centennial IPA last night, it is good, and hopslam is great whenever you can find it. I am drinking a troegs java head ATM, and I have a growler full of hop-back that I got from the brewery yesterday :) . If you ever see the Troegs flying mouflan barleywine, BUY ALL OF IT THAT YOU CAN haha. It is awesome, I have two 22 oz bottles I am taking home, and mixed six with two java heads and two troegenators. I really liked that brewery.
Toured clipper city brewery today, and that was a great one. Bought their remaining stock of Big DIPA, a few of the rye hop porters, and a 4 pack of their below deck barley wine, and I got a few other freebies from them ;) . Clipper city was an awesome brewery, I made friends with some of the people there so that we can do some beer trading :)

Nice man. I didn't like the HopBack, though. It was like a much, much weaker version of the Nugget Nectar. The Troegenator, however, is very, very tasty.
If you haven't already had the Dark Horse Crooked Tree, do it now. Trust me. AMAZING beer. The La Fin Du Monde turned out to be my favorite of the night though, absolutely incredible beer, and it's so deceptively easy to drink. I wouldn't have even been able to tell you it was 9% without looking at the label.
Here's how it went, I haven't uploaded the pics, so meh:
Dark Horse Crooked Tree IPA: Very well balanced, very malty but the hops are still strong enough to keep up, and they are on the front of the finish but not overly bitter, leaving you wanting more of it.
Dogfish Head 60 Minute IPA: Bottle was skunked. I was so angry about it too, since I love it.
Bell's Oberon Wheat Ale: Meh. That's all I can describe it as. It's a wheat ale, and it's mediocre. What more do I need to say?
Bell's Hopslam DIPA: Amazing, as usual. Still hoppy, still sweet, still easy to drink.
Great Lakes Brewing Company Holy Moses White Ale: Smelled/tasted like they used Belgian yeast. Quite nice for a wheat ale, and I will probably buy more of it. Very good.
Troegs HopBack Amber Ale: Also meh. The Nugget Nectar (Imperial Amber) is 1000x better, IMO. This one just didn't have enough of anything to make it a drinkable beer to me.
Founder's Centennial IPA: Also VERY nice. This one was a bit more hoppy than the other 2 that I had, but was still very easy to drink, and very complex hop profile.
La Fin Du Monde: The best of them all, BY FAR. So very, very smooth, nice yeast that wasn't overpowering, the hops were subdued, but still present, malt was very nice, some sweetness but not overly so. Just sent shivers down my spine on the first sip. Awesome beer.
I am going to go back up this Friday when I get paid and buy some more stuff. I am really thinking that I will pick another La Fin Du Monde up and then go from there.
Kef
Nice man. I didn't like the HopBack, though. It was like a much, much weaker version of the Nugget Nectar. The Troegenator, however, is very, very tasty.
Hop back is available year round, unfortunatly nugget nectar is only available once a year :( . And even more unfortunate, I did not get to taste the nugget nectar... The hop back, IMO is a very great hopped amber ale, something that is light enough to be drinkable, but still has a load of great flavor to it.
The flying Mouflan is supposed to be an amped up version of the nugget nectar, so you are bound to love it if you find it ;) .
I have not yet found a beer from Troegs I would not drink... Had the pale ale again last night, and it was very good. Their sunshine pils is an awesome pilsner style, VERY light and drinkable in any weather, but still has enough hops and taste to be worth drinking. As a matter of fact, I might just go back to the brewery to do some more "tasting" this afternoon :)

IPA's are where its at.
Well, hops in general are where its at.
I drank one of my Heavy Seas Letters of Marque this past weekend. I will be ordering some more of that, it was pretty damned awesome.
They call it a hopped rye porter, but it is pretty similar to a black IPA. They had to call it a hopped rye porter, because there is technically no classification for a rye brewed porter. It is good though, nice malty porter body with a great hop presence.

Roflcopter. I got to try the Flying Dog Raging Bitch on tap tonight at Weasel Boy, it was better on tap, by far. The malt comes out a lot more on tap, versus the yeast being the main flavor component of the bottled version.
Also, hoss, the Black IPA is back on tap, and it is far more nom this year than last. I should have got a pic while I was there, but I didn't have my camera on me :(

I just dont like the belgian yeast at all, and in an IPA I wouldnt want to malt to be the predominant flavor. All in all, I mean, its just not my thing, I am not dogging the beer, I am sure that some people really like it, I just dont like that spice flavor that I am sure you know what I am talking about...
Also, srsly PM me shipping cost for a growler of that black IPA. If they have any distinctive markings on the growler I am even more interested... I have started collecting them now. And black IPA's are pretty much my new favorite thing...
I started and finished my growler of Victory st Boisterous tonight. It was more tasty than I remembered haha.

I'd guess that it'd be a little bit. I'ma have to go get another growler though, since I can't find mine :(
That spice you are referring to is the yeast. If you don't like Belgian yeast, I would recommend staying away from Brewery Ommegang's stuff. They all use the same house strain, and it's Belgian. You know it's there, it's not well hidden. The new edition of the GI Matilda is good, but it's got more than just the Belgian yeast in it, it's got brett as well.
I'm going to go grab the camera and upload the pics from the last 2 weeks. I've got a lot to show :P
Kef
Oh yeah, I knew it was the yeast, that is what I was saying I dont care for... I have learned over the years that I just dont care for it, although it is starting to grow on me as being "tolerable", I still dont care for it... I mean, will I drink it? Yes. Will I order it again? definitly not haha. Who knows, if someone brews something completely different with it, I will try it, and might even like it...
FWIW, when I was at the clipper city brewery, the guy pouring samples mixed me up his "special blend" which was (for the most part) a 50/50 mix of their belgian wheat and loose cannon, and it was pretty delicious! I was suprised, the hops swallowed the belgian yeast.
and as far as the growler was concerned, I was intending on buying one haha. Preferably one with some distinctive markings, since I like the way they look ;)

I will be blatantly honest about their copper, their is nothing giant that jumps out at you, but it is damn tasty and VERY drinkable.
As far as pilsners go, with the warm weather coming, they have been growing on me like they never have before... They are not refreshing, like a great pale ale or something with a wallop of flavor is, but I have found a few recently that have really suprised me with their body and hop content... Troegs sunshine pils was one of them.
If you want a bigger beer than the OMB copper I can go up and get you one of the carolina brewery's draft selections (which now that I think about it might be a better choice, and is just as close to me), they make some good stuff too...

It's the top rated Tripel in the world, according to Beer Advocate:
http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/22/34
Almost 1900 reviews, A average by users, A+ from the Alstrom brothers. 9% alcohol, and is totally imperceptible to the taste buds. Incredible body, creamy mouthfeel, very complex flavors, the yeast doesn't overpower like most Belgian style beers.

From left to right are: Left Hand Brewing 400 Pound Monkey English IPA, Stone Pale Ale, Great Lakes Brewing Company Edmund Fitzgerald Porter (best American porter available, IMO), Brewery Ommegang Rare Vos Belgian Amber Ale, Sierra Nevada Torpedo Extra IPA, Sierra Nevada Porter, Lagunitas Wilco Tango Foxtrot (Lagunitas calls it an Imperial Brown Ale, but Beer Advocate lists it as an American Strong Ale), and Great Lakes Brewing Company Lake Erie Monster IIPA.

Nice flavor, very hoppy beer, it's like a slightly harsh version of Hopslam. It's got a good malt backbone, but it's hop forward. Best hop aroma I've ever encountered. So far, I'm thoroughly impressed.

Yeah, it's pretty dark. It is also tasty. Probably my favorite porter so far, and I've had my fair share of them (Sam Smith Taddy Porter, Founder's, Bell's, Flying Dog Gonzo, Stone Smoked Porter, etc.).
Right now in my glass is the Stone Pale Ale, and the aroma is.... meh. I hope the flavor is better than the aroma.
I've had, in order:
Lake Erie Monster
Edmund Fitzgerald
Torpedo
Rare Vos
Pale Ale
Next is the 400 Pound Monkey. I think I'll save the SN Porter for tomorrow night. I'll get the rest of the pics on tomorrow night as well.

Next is the 400 Pound Monkey. I think I'll save the SN Porter for tomorrow night. I'll get the rest of the pics on tomorrow night as well.
BTW, Hoss, if you read this and have access to the GLBC stuff, if you can get your hands on that Lake Erie Monster, DO IT. Amazing beer. If you can't, let me know, as I'll throw one in with your growler.
Kef
We get some of their stuff, dont think I have seen the lake erie monster though... I think that most of our stores carry their three "flagship" brews.
The 400 pound monkey is an odd brew IMO. It took a few bottles for it to grow on me, but it is not a bad IPA once I got used to it.
In my fridge right now is SweetWater "Roadtrip" seasonal. Started as a pilsner, then they threw some ale yeast in it. Another somewhat interesting taste, but very nice, light and refreshing. And also Magic Hat "Wacko", fucking delicious summer beer brewed with beets. Dont let the pink color fool you, it is awesome, light flavor with a solid body, and an excellent taste. Nice and refreshing.

Hoss, I took your word for it and picked up a bomber of the Troegs Flying Mouflan barleywine. I will comment about it later.
As for the lineup tonight, it consists of Ommegang Three Philosophers, Westmalle Trappist Tripel, the Mouflan as above, Anchor Liberty Ale, Boulder Cold Hop, Heavy Seas Loose Cannon, Bell's Kalamazoo Stout, and 2 other beers that I can't remember.
You wont regret that flying mouflan.
I opened one of my bottles of that a few weeks ago, fucking nom.

Rauch = smoke
rauchbier = beers made with smoked barley.
I have nothing against them, they go well with grilling only because the smoke around you really kind of masks the smoke flavor on the beer. I am not saying they are bad, but I have not had an example of them that I am crazy about, yet...
If you liked the shiner smokehaus, you better buy more while you can, it is a seasonal brew and that season is long gone... They wont be on the shelves much longer.

Ah, I c.
I knew it was seasonal but thought it'd at least last through the summer?
Not likely. Summer = light beers, usually pilsners, like the shiner 101 czech style pilsner.
The smokehaus was a fall/winter seasonal. TBH, the fact that you found it on the shelf this late in the year is kind of suprising. Rauchbiers are (typically) fairly heavy on the pallate, which is not what people are typically looking for in the summer.
