So if I am in shape now, and I get as fat as i can, I can still win the prize? Its a body transformation....

I may join this time. I did nothing this summer semester and gained weight back. I keep using the excuse about time, but I know I could have set enough time to at least continue maintaining. The weight gain is inexcusable. I may need this for motivation to get back to it.

The idea was to make the body competition more objective because I felt like my and JP could not compete on a level playing field with a more obese person. If I lost what snatch lost, I'd weigh about as much as a one year old.
So, I thought we could make it more of a sealed bid...and keep in mind I am still trying to work out the details of how to make it fair to all.
What would happen is with my $20 entry fee I would say here are my stated goals
*100 pushups
*25 pull ups
*run 1/2 marathon in 10min pace
*lose 3% body fat
So at the end of the period, I send a video to the judges of the top 2, and then provide documention for the 2nd two.
Let's say, in my vid I can only do 80 pushups...then you lose.
Competitior 2
*75 pushups
*10 pull ups
*run 1/2 marathon in 12min pace
*lose 6% body fat
If me and competitor 2 both meet our assigned goals, then I win and he loses. If he meets his and I do not, then he wins.
What is hard is agreeing on acceptable metrics for judging. I would like to have multiple metrics so that everyone can do well at something. It wouldn't take too much for me to get to 100 pushups, but losing body fat may be harder, whereas a fat person can lose body fat %, but not do as many pushups. The metrics should be such that everyone has a shot, not just a fat person lose a bunch of weight and win. Also, the metrics should be what a person actually wants for themselves. I mean, I could have had a shot had I gained 30 lbs of muscle (probably improbable, but you get the point) and been very competitive...but that's not what I want to look like so winning the competition does not allow me to meet my own fitness goals.
ngsm13
07-25-2011, 10:00 AM
That seems impossibly complicated, especially with the ability to sandbag...
I agree with what you're saying but I feel the judges should be able to know who made a bigger transformation, that its easier for an obese person to just lose weight compared to an average person becoming jacked. They should know what was a harder goal to accomplish and give credit where necessary.

How would one go about sandbagging?
There is no, I went from 2 pushups to 2000 pushups. If you want to sandbag and promise to do only 20 pushups then you are guarenteed to lose. Barring me losing internet connection and both arms (I can do a few with one arm now), I can do more than 20 pushups. The fact you must do them or lose entirely prevents people from bidding 200 pushups when they can only do 50.
The hard part is deciding what categories will we make bids.
The subjective body transformation isn't fair. It's reasonable that a fatass would want to lose 20 or 30 lbs but not as reasonable that a lean person would want to gain any weight at all.
The goal of my plan is that it allows for greater participation in the pursuit of physical fitness, not gorging or starving oneself to win $100.

But you measure that in how many push ups or whatever you can do, my only goal from the contest is to become more of a boss and im not sure how the judges will measure that.

Correct. I am looking for an objective measurement. A pushup is discrete, measureable, action and easily comparable to others.
Becoming more of a boss is frought with the same complications as last time, where if you are not overweight and have no ambition to gain weight then you will lose...mainly because you didn't transform your body enough. It's not a trick or anything, it's in the title you are trying to significantly change your body.
[QUOTE=bluecar;674060]I would like to have multiple metrics so that everyone can do well at something. /QUOTE]
Why doesn't everyone just spend their $20 on a pretty blue ribbon, then?
If you don't beat someone, you're not a winner.

Sandbagging: how about I promise to do all the things that you listed ...
*100 pushups

The only thing in there that would be difficult for me is the body fat. Everything else, I can do for you right now. By choosing goals that are easily accomplished, I can ensure that I 'win'.

Right. How do you know I won't bid to do 200 or 2000 pushups? The only way you could sandbag in one event is to know, for certain, that you are able to do more/better than all other competitors. I would hope half the people would participate could do 100 pushups at the end of 13 weeks. I would think the winner would have to submit somewhere around 200 pushups to be competitive.
Furthermore, the reason for the body fat is to attempt to make it fairer for all body types. I agree on the body fat issue, which is why I included it. I am not set on these metrics but I am just suggesting (in order to gain more support) is shifting the contest away from body transformation (which put a bad taste in a couple people's mouths) to something more objective. It was just an idea.

This.
If I were to join this contest I doubt I would do the first push up, merely because I know I would see better progress from a bench press.
Right. How do you know I won't bid to do 200 or 2000 pushups? The only way you could sandbag in one event is to know, for certain, that you are able to do more/better than all other competitors. If the winner is the person who can do the most pushups or pullups, then the winner will probably be the person who is currently in the best shape for the chosen exercises.
If pullups and running are included, I could probably win the contest without actually doing anything. If it is deadlifts or some other test of power, we could just give the trophy to Junior. Even with 3 months of training, I've no hope of catching up to him. Similarly, unless there is another climber on the forum, I doubt anyone could train up to my level of pullups.
This takes the contest away from the soft and fat and hands it to those already in shape. I'd say that we could have two different competitions, but those of us who're already in shape don't need a competition to stay that way ... but the softies do need some incentive.
I get that .. I'm just stating the reasons that I think the idea will fail.
If you want an objective contest, you should probably stick to a single metric. Most improved time in a 10km, maybe, or greatest improvement in km/week.
The Biggest Loser tries to have a 'fair' weightloss metric by comparing the weight lost by each contestant to their starting weight. However, it is always the epically morbidly obese who win .. the winner of every season hovers in the 50% weight loss range. For the dude who started the season at 525lbs and ended under 250, this is reasonable. But for the woman who started at 240 .. well, if she dropped to 120lbs., she'd be unhealthy.
As for people with bad tastes in their mouths .. they should concentrate less on winning and losing and more on not being fat.
I saw that you should keep the contest as it was and let the whiners stay home and eat ice cream. Look at the positive results of the contest (soraiden) and ignore the negative (whiny :troll:).
That's just my newb opinion, in a nutshell. :)
It doesn't seem complicated to me, that's neither here nor there. I just don't see much participation this go-round.
Maybe we should remove the entry fee and prizes and just have bragging rights / pride for the winner?
I wouldn't want to pay to enter a contest with somewhat nebulous winning criteria, but I would enter a forum contest for fun if I wanted to lose weight and wanted support and inspiration.

Bro, people that are out of shape have no pride and they wouldn't know what to do with it if they were to have it.

This is a good point. And if they do well in the contest (lose weight, get in shape), they'll have pride regardless.
So .. we need to find some incentive for the fatties to get in that they recognise when they're fat.
Or .. we can say fuck it and keep on pimpin'
Option B FTW.

Protip: sushi roll is Vancouver slang for a young :azn: hottie who gives it up to white guys.

I was the only person who thought it wasn't as fair as it could have been and not fat. If I lost 3 or 4 more %, then I'd be under 10...which is where I want to be.
But you are right though...perhaps we should just let those who want to participate do and those who don't find their own contest.
I'd go with a pushup contest with you though. Most in one minute?

He's right .. climbing is all 95% pull with your arms and push with your legs. So much so, in fact, that climbers who don't crosstrain end up looking like hunchbacks. They overdevelop their back muscles and don't develop their chests (all pull and no push), so they end up looking like apes.
In order to counter this, I do 50 pushups every morning with my feet up on my desk. I haven't timed myself, but I do them pretty quickly because my coffee is waiting. :lockandload:

Same with me but I probably wont keep a journal or anything, I already started eating good and running since I figured this would fall apart. I now remember why I switched from the football team to the golf team in high school, I dont like to exercise :crap:
