View Full Version : Active Sub Suggestion

Alright, I'm in the market for a powered subwoofer for my dorm room, but next year I will want it to be sufficient for the apartment I get. My budget is around $300, and I'm pretty sure I want a 12" woofer. It will accompany a set of 6.5" component speakers which I'm building in one of my classes (we get to build the crossover and assemble them in their enclosures). I was looking at some made by BIC, any experience with that brand? Any other suggestions?

That's way more sub than I need right now. I dont have the resources to build an enclosure, and I dont want to spend a ton on top of that to get an amp.

I had a BIC tape deck once. Given to me by my father. He bought it used from someone when I was around 3. It died when I was 22.
I had a 12" FI Q on a 500 watt dayton plate amp in my dorm room a couple years ago, shit bumped yo!

Skimp out and you'll regret it. I have 2 Sundown E8s, can build an enclosure for an unbeatable price and all you gotta do is grab a Dayton/Bash 250w plate amp. I'll cut the mounting hole for the amp in the enclosure. Any interest just shoot me another PM. I thought you just needed a sub.

I bet it's the sound they make. Reminds them of snuggling with their owner while he's asleep.

I have an AA Atlas motor that would be perfect for home use if rebuilt.
You can put it on top of papers
You can manage all your sewing needles or even your screws
You can stick papers to the fridge with it.
Maybe even disrupt the images of an old school tv.

I do know that the brand I posted is one of the white van brands lol, and I suspect BIC is too.
The only thing that BIC makes that I've heard anyone using seriously is an indoor FM antenna thingy.
Personally, I'd lurk on Audiogon until something comes up in the $400 range. I don't know if you can go cheaper than that for a 12" - I was shopping around in this price range when I bought an Adire Rava in 2004, and IIRC the prices were about the same then.
If you know anyone with a router, you can get a length of Sonotube from a home improvement place (it's used to form concrete pilings), and cut the end caps from MDF or birch ply. Cheap and very easy way to get a lot of volume in a small footprint, and most of the "box" is already built for you.

Something like this, but with adjustable inputs for each channel and a "digital" readout.

Looks like I'm getting a Crown XLS 402 for the highs and mids. Still toying with several ideas for the sub stage.

Thanks. I need to grab a 3 prong to 2 prong converter from home for my laptop, I'm getting horrible ground loop with the charger plugged in.
I don't know what you're comfortable spending, but this is the "safe" way to deal with ground loops: http://www.jensen-transformers.com/ci2rr.html
Just makes me feel better knowing the safety ground is still there :)

Ended up going for the premier acoustic sub. I'm happy with it for the price, plenty powerful for my dorm room.

Whip out some ft and boneless and shape them up a bit more then spray some gloss black on them bitches. I have seen a few crazy PVC speakers before. Easy way to get a modern style.

Yeah, that's what I thought the first time I saw them. Smart way to do it, pretty easy enclosure to assemble. The crossover is laid out on the wooden base inside the tube. Eventually I'll build some legit enclosures for them, but they sound damn good even like this.

How do the speakers stay connected? Glue?
The ones that I've seen have a larger baffle for the driver, if for nothing else to avoid having a speaker with no horizontal baffle around it (not a good thing with a full range speaker).

The PVC is glue, but the speakers usually screw into a baffle which us glued to the PVC, I am not sure what undead has going here, ask him.

There are second rings of pvc that fit perfectly inside each hole where the speakers are mounted. Those were pvc cemented in there to provide more material for the speakers to be screwed into. The cap that the tweeter is mounted in is attached to the larger pvc by a bolt that has a hole drilled through it for the tweeter wires. The large bend, the straight pipe, and the wooden base are all connected just through compression right now so they can still be disassembled.
