The Saints released FB Karney and signed RB Heath Evans from the Pats.

I honestly don't know what to think about this one. I liked Karney, but apparently Evans is supposed to bring the same blocking ability, better receiving skills and special teams play.

I don't know, maybe Karney got tagged with responsibility over that Saints inability to convert in short yardage situations.

They absoultely need a big back. Those are the guys who preserve a 10 pt lead in the 4th and win games. It pisses me off to hear people want to just look at yards per touch for running backs. It matters how you get those yards, and we don't need to be relying on swing passes to Reggie in the 4th.

Yeah, I think Vick has made NFL teams reconsider the "running QB." Sure, it's great to be able to keep a play alive or make a play with your legs. However, as in Vick's case, the QB appears to use that ability as a crutch and it ends up harming his development in learning to go through his reads and make the throw.

Yeah, my recollection is that TO made it impossible for Garcia to stay around. TO's craziness may have had more credibility at that time since that was the first pro QB that he threw under the bus. I really think that he ruined Garcia's career.

He was going to count for ~$13M against the cap...no way they'd take that hit on a decent #2/good #3 WR.

I think Indy wanted to restructure but Harrison didn't want to. I don't think anyone has even shown interest in him. Maybe he'll start shooting people at his bar and hiding the weapon in his car wash on a full-time basis now.

Mayhew is actually building a team. He's raped Dallas, and this Peterson deal is full of win. How he managed to trade an overated player for a pro bowler at a position of need, and set himself up for salary cap flexibility in the future is amazing. Millen got hosed in the Dre Bly and Shaun Rogers trade. Depending on this draft, Mayhew already has done a better job than Millen ever did.

The trade that sent (http://www.nfl.com/news/story?id=09000d5d80efe755&template=without-video-with-comments&confirm=true) Matt Cassel (http://www.nfl.com/players/mattcassel/profile?id=CAS541133) and Mike Vrabel (http://www.nfl.com/players/mikevrabel/profile?id=VRA088990) to the Kansas City Chiefs (http://www.nfl.com/teams/kansascitychiefs/profile?team=KC) appears to be only the first phase of some major wheeling and dealing by the New England Patriots (http://www.nfl.com/teams/newenglandpatriots/profile?team=NE) this offseason.
The second phase, NFL sources say, is likely to involve a trade that would send Carolina Panthers (http://www.nfl.com/teams/carolinapanthers/profile?team=CAR) defensive end Julius Peppers (http://www.nfl.com/players/juliuspeppers/profile?id=PEP422041) to the Patriots in exchange for the second-round pick (34th overall) they received from the Chiefs on Feb. 28.

According to league sources, the Patriots and Panthers are hoping to complete the deal at some point between the March 22-25 NFL owners meetings and the start of the draft on April 25.

Peppers, on whom the Panthers have placed a franchise tag (http://www.nfl.com/news/story?id=09000d5d80ed19f4&template=with-video-with-comments&confirm=true) that assures him of a one-year contract worth $16.68 million, would be converted to outside linebacker in New England's 3-4 defense.

The Patriots already were looking ahead to the possibility of acquiring Peppers when they shipped Cassel and Vrabel to Kansas City, NFL sources say, because they wanted to clear the salary-cap space necessary to sign Peppers to a new contract that would put him among the higher-paid defensive players in the league. After signing Cassel to a one-year, franchise-tag tender contract worth $14.65 million, New England had nearly $30 million in cap money devoted to two quarterbacks (including $14.62 million for Tom Brady (http://www.nfl.com/players/tombrady/profile?id=BRA371156)).

Once the Patriots were convinced that Brady would be fully recovered from the season-ending knee injury he suffered last year, they were comfortable with trading his replacement to the Chiefs and putting the wheels in motion to bolster a defense that has gotten particularly old at linebacker. Vrabel and fellow linebacker Tedy Bruschi (http://www.nfl.com/players/tedybruschi/profile?id=BRU812794) are well into the twilight of their respective careers.

NFL sources say the Panthers would welcome the chance to unload Peppers for a second-round draft pick, even though it would be well below his market value, because it would be less costly than signing a first-rounder. The Panthers already have made some belt-tightening financial moves within their front office.
This, in part, could help answer the lingering question of why the Patriots were willing to take only a second-round pick for Cassel and Vrabel rather than possibly go for a higher choice as part of a three-way deal involving the Denver Broncos (http://www.nfl.com/teams/denverbroncos/profile?team=DEN), who were ready to give up Jay Cutler (http://www.nfl.com/players/jaycutler/profile?id=CUT288111) for Cassel. Without an additional second-round pick, the Patriots might not be able to pursue Peppers.

League sources also point out that the Panthers don't have a first-round choice after trading it to the Philadelphia Eagles (http://www.nfl.com/teams/philadelphiaeagles/profile?team=PHI) and aren't scheduled to draft until 59th overall (near the bottom of the second round). The 34th spot would give Carolina the second pick of the second round and a chance to land a player with a first-round rating who was pushed down to that spot for whatever reason.

Also, according to NFL sources, there is a third phase to the Patriots' offseason strategy. They would like to further beef up their linebacking corps by adding an inside linebacker in the draft. They are known to believe that USC's Rey Maualuga (http://www.nfl.com/combine/profiles/rey-maualuga?id=79852) would be a great fit for their scheme, especially when paired with Jerod Mayo (http://www.nfl.com/players/jerodmayo/profile?id=MAY651489), their 2008 first-round pick who was the NFL's top defensive rookie. However, some early projections suggest it might be long shot for Maualuga to be available for the Patriots with the 23rd overall pick.

Patriots coach Bill Belichick is known for making excellent decisions when it comes to acquiring players, but at least one NFL player-personnel evaluator questions whether Peppers would be a good fit in New England.
"This is a guy who totally went on strike two years ago because he wasn't happy with his contract," said the player personnel source, who requested anonymity. "He's also very long (in the torso), which is not ideal for a 3-4 outside linebacker. And he can't drop into coverage. He's very stiff.

"But one of the things (the Patriots) are looking at is the fact that, in passing situations, they can have Peppers up front with (Richard) Seymour and (Jarvis) Green. That makes it easier for them to take (nose tackle Vince) Wilfork out of the game in (passing situations) and just play him on running downs."

The Pats defense is definitely improved even without Peppers...add him in, and that's going to be a drastic improvement on the defensive side.

If you are a Flacons fan you need to hope that Vick does not get reinstated:

A lot of the questions I get from readers are about Michael Vick.

We've touched on what his future may hold and how it impacts the Falcons many times. But I want to share some more Vick talk with you.

D. Orlando Ledbetter did an excellent piece for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution recently that gives answers to a lot of the frequent questions about Vick and the Falcons. It's well worth reading, so take a look.

The bottom line here is the Falcons probably will end up releasing Vick if he is reinstated by the NFL. That move would cost them $7.1 million against the 2009 salary cap.

If you go by the points, Dallas would have to give up all 11 of those picks (or damn close to it) in order to get a mid first.

Rank these TE's based on current capabilities:

1. J. Shockey

2. T. Gonzales

3. K. Wenslow Jr.

Be sure to take off points for the fact a player may be old as hell, or had a motorcycle accident and/or a staph infection.

Hard to tell right now but LeSean McCoy (if Westbrook gets injured), Percy Harvin, Chris Wells, and Knowshon Moreno (if the Broncos make it over .500) all are going to be given lots of touches per game right off the bat on winning teams. They're all good bets for offensive rookie of the year.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP)—ESPN is reporting that retired quarterback Brett Favre is scheduled to meet with Minnesota Vikings coach Brad Childress about a possible comeback.

The report Tuesday cited an anonymous source. It said Favre and Childress will meet at an undisclosed location later in the week. The longtime Packers quarterback retired for the second time after spending last season with the New York Jets. Both he and his agent, Bus Cook, said previously this spring that Favre intended to stay retired.

Cook did not immediately return a phone call to his Mississippi office.

Vikings spokesman Bob Hagan also did not immediately return a phone call.

Childress said last weekend that the Vikings would discuss Favre’s availability after he was granted his release by the Jets.
