As many of you may or may not know, I have somewhat recently taken to straight razor shaving. After doing so, my dad told me that he had an old shaving set that belonged to my great-great-grandfather, and he asked me if I wanted it. I was fucking pumped as hell to get something like that offered to me! It is pretty fucking cool (IMO) to get something functional handed down to you through your family, something that old with that much personal history, that you intend to use every day... Not many people have something like that in their lives. Anyways, here are the pics of my restoration, I have polished the blade about as far as I think that I am going to polish it, I haven't found the scales that I want to use yet, I want to find some like the originals, but I will have to search for them...

Edited for image restrictions...

Here is what I started with:

Most of those are HDR, last pic is non-HDR and is probably the true-est to show the shape of the razor, it had been in storage for a long time, and it wasn't rusty, but it was DARK with oxidation and build up...

It is not perfect IMO, there are some deep scratches that I couldn't get out (but I also think that I caused them with the lower grit sanding...), and I lost some of the stamping because I sanded a little too hard/much, but I am so far happy with the results. Can't wait to get some new scales on it, and get it honed so I can start using it!!

For anyone interested, it is a Shumate 018 5/8" full hollow blade from circa 1904. I also have the original leather sleeve that it came in, which is also worn and tattered, but has a button clasp that has the Shumate logo on it, it is pretty cool to have not only a product that is 100+ years old, but to also have the original packaging, pretty neat IMO!

Sick, you probably killed the value of that thing 10 fold though by polishing it; however since it was your intent to use it I guess likely necessary.

I kind of doubt that, Shumate blades are not exactly top shelf, they are generally regarded as good shavers, but they don't bring in big money like some name brand blades (wade and butcher, TI, JA henckels, etc). User grade Shumate blades typically sell for anywhere from $20-50 dollars, and this one was pretty far from user grade IMO. But regardless of that, the family history of the razor makes it pretty priceless to me, and I do plan on using it, and I am pretty pumped about it.

Once I put new scales on it, if I were to put a street value to it, I think I could pretty easily sell it for $35-45, but again, that is something I wouldn't do with this blade.

Bro nice. I've got a pocket knife that belonged to my greatgpa. Given to me by my pops, he got it from his, etc. Its just a sentimental piece, I don't use it. Real Swiss shit.

Yup he did, but he's not investing in this tool to flip it. He's investing in it to use it. So what he did was necessary.

They had to be tweekers of some kind. There were speakers on both sides of the television and then stole one from one side but grabbed a box of equal size from the other side, leaving the other speaker entirely. And this was during the day. lol

They were nice enough to leave ski gloves though.

As of right now, not sharp at all. I will still have to have it honed once I put the scales on it, then it will be sharp and ready to use.

Lulz. I was done with school WAY before you and I still have two loans running. One will finish this year but the other still has years on it. I'm in no hurry to pay off something that doesn't cost me anything.

Yeah ... mine started accruing interest 12 months after I was done school.

The rate was favorable but still ... debt is debt and needs to be squashed.
