I want to set up a network in my house, I have 2 laptops with vista HP and a desktop with XP, with our internet we have a 2wire 2700HGV-B router that we use for wireless. Can I set it up using that or do I need something else?

I think the 2wires have a built in wireless router, and most notebooks have built in wireless adapters so link em up and you should be good to go.

Nope, that's all you need. As long as everything can connect to the internet through that router, you can make a home network too. Make sure file and folder sharing is enabled on the machines if you want to share stuff. Then, make sure Network Discovery is on. Once all that is good, right click on folders that you want to share, select share, and it's easy as pie.

oh, and secure your network, unless you want everyone using your shyt.and make sure wireless radio is enabled. i think 192.168.1.254 is to connect to the router.

Seems easy enough, I thought there was more to it with XP though.

It's set so you need a password to access, I assume that's what you mean

Most of the time the router is at 192.168.0.1. If it's WEP secured, I'd change it to WPA2. WEP is easily cracked.

Although true, WEP works with things better than some of the others. Unless your neighbors are haxors, you have very little to worry about. Plus you have to ask yourself how much shit you have that matters to anyone besides you.
Now, that being said I'm running all kinds of fucking security shit :sneaky: I think what I'm saying is if you run into issues, first attempt to remove some of the issues would be WEP.
Also, sometimes it is 192.168.1.0 as well. Normally in the manual or on the bottom of the router.
This will be an EASY setup. You can share a single printer as well.

I am an idiot and having problems though, I can't get either computer to see each other. I'm not 100% sure I can do it using that 2wire. I've tried walking through everything I can find on networking between xp and vista and still no dice.

When i searched your Router on Google its showing it has a wireless built in......If you can try to set up a wireless point on one Pc first then add the other.
Its easy as cake.can you take Screenshots of what you get when your trying to connect.?
