President Obama on Thursday accepted South Carolina Rep. Joe Wilson's apology for shouting “You lie!” during his speech on health care reform Wednesday night, but that didn't diminish the harsh spotlight on a state already reeling from a public image slam brought on by its governor's affair with an Argentine woman.
“I'm a big believer that we all make mistakes,” Obama told reporters at the White House after a Cabinet meeting. “He apologized quickly and without equivocation and I'm appreciative of that.”
House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn, D-S.C., said if Wilson doesn't apologize for violating House rules of decorum that he expects a resolution to be introduced calling for censure or some form of reprimand or disapproval.
Despite heated opposition to Obama's health care proposal from the conservative majority in the state, most of Wilson's political allies and Upstate residents questioned on the subject Thursday said they disapproved of the West Columbia Republican's eruption when Obama said his plan wouldn't provide benefits to illegal aliens.
“The president deserves respect, especially when speaking to a joint session of the Congress,” said Republican Rep. Bob Inglis of Greenville. “Our opposing views should be presented decently and in order, not as interruptions.”
“Congressman Wilson is a friend of mine and is a good person,” said 3rd District Rep. Gresham Barrett, also a Republican. “I have talked to the congressman about his outburst and he realizes that it was an inappropriate action … It is important that we move on from this incident so that we can better focus on the issues at hand.”
The state's two Republican senators took a more critical tone against Obama in responding to Wilson's presidential interruption.
“Joe has apologized for the timing of his remark, but he's right that the bill could allow coverage for illegal immigrants,” Sen. Jim DeMint of Greenville said.
“Democrats twice defeated amendments that would have required citizenship verification of these programs, and the nonpartisan Congressional Research Service has confirmed that illegal immigrants could receive coverage under the bill. As Americans have learned on the bailouts, stimulus, and now health care, the president's rhetoric does not match his policies.”
Is the South really the only ones that realize Obama is full of crap? It's almost time to secede again. I really hope they bring slaves back.
