My cars alright with speed but I lacks that urmph. Has anyone here installed a kit onto their vehicles? Not looking for a hardcore boost just looking for a little more urmph. Ya know?

As for turbo I have no clue, I am sure honda tech has a shit load of info. If you have not been there be prewarned they are a bunch of faggots for the most part though entertaining from time to time.

^^ im wid joo.
and what he said, if you're serious... why dont you just do a swap?
fbi90909
09-29-2009, 05:15 PM
yeah i'm serious about the topic.
i want a swap but i don't think my car is worth a swap.
i have an AT.
for a swap i'm looking to spend an entire 8-10k to get the proper parts plus the fact there are no junkyards anywhere nearby i won't be able to find salvage parts for cheap w/o having to pay extra for shipping. having to also swap everything from an AT to MT would need many more parts than most of those that do swaps. plus i have 1 more year till my cars payed off. by that time if i wanted to invest in a swap i could just invest in a RSX instead w/o having to do any type of swap.
with boost i'm looking at maybe 4k and is something i could do.
2k for a kit and the rest for other needed parts like management systems or such.
i'm not looking for a full head on race car and boosting at like 18psi, i'm just looking to run around 7-8psi.. just wanting a little more HP.

i would rather swap then boost, and thats hella expensive for a swap, unless you plan on swapping to a k20?

pffft.. what kind of swap did you think i had in mind?
k20 swap would be a direct fit for my gen civic.

i would love a sleeper sedan with a K20, but it's just way too much to invest into. unless if things change for next year and prices drop some on the K20's then maybe i'll do a swap.

IMO you should just wait it out until you can get that RSX you want. 4 grand for a little extra horsepower just doesn't seem worth it.
By saving the money now, you can get more car in the future.

What motor is the D block? dohc vtec?

09-29-2009, 07:33 PM
it's an SOHC from an LX trim.
i could swap to an EX D17A2 block but i don't think there would be much of a difference when boosted between either of the 2.
not worth the money.

i auno, mainly cause i'm just about done paying for it. i don't wanna have to go 15-20g's deep into another car. i needa buy a roof over my head at some point.
plus the only other car i would consider in getting would be an is250. other than that, nothings really appealing to me atm.

i'm not a racer :P
thing with the civic is the d17 is just decent for your daily driver. but when you got more than 2 people in the car plus a single sub it adds much drag to the car.
the boost is just it, to give it a little more urmph..
the bmw 325ix was great at it's get up and go but that got fucked.

IMO it's still the best idea to wait it out, especially if you want to get a house at some point.
Investing that 4 grand could go a long way. Cars are an investment that loses value. Houses on the other hand...
Don't get me wrong, I love cars. I wish I could do some more mods to mine, but it's not in the cards right now.

oh, word. good luck with whatever you choose mang.
If you just want a little oomph then why not save the money on a turbo set up and go nitrous.
It will add what you want, cost a fraction of the price, and be just as reliable/unreliable. Adding a moddest 50 hp shot should be about the equivelant of putting 8 pounds of boost on your motor...
fbi90909
09-30-2009, 09:12 AM
The urmph i'm looking for isn't a short term urmph that nitrous would give me. A turbo will help more of the cars power band unlike having to run shots of nitrous. Course I could save more with the initial cost of a nitrous setup but I'd end up having to continue paying for refills. With that I'd have to drive 7+hrs out to get refills.
I'm not sure which of the 2 would do more damage to my car but I would think that a partially high shot of nitrous would be worse over time.
Nitrous would help all of the cars powerband just as well as a turbo would... They both do the same thing via different methods, they both add more o2 to the motor.
The only difference, is that you can choose to only use the nitrous when you need it. Just install a nitrous kit with a WOT switch, you wont be running shots, you will just get it when you need it. You dont need a power adder if you arent running at WOT.
Also, since you wouldnt be using the NO2 all the time, it could very possibly be less detrimental to your engine. I also bet there is somewhere closer than 7 hours away that can fill a NO2 tank for you... This is just food for thought, as I also agree with everyone else saying to save your money for either a swap or a better car. I think the NO2 set up is a better alternative than the turbo for adding a little bit of pep.

I'm sure you've heard this already, but DO NOT boost or nitro a stock D17! I own one of these motors, and have researched it a lot.
The issue is that the D17's have much smaller rods than the B series, and the bottom end bearing caps are not braced AT ALL. The rods on the B series Honda's are about twice the size, and the main bearing caps are all one piece, at least on the B16 A2's I've worked on, and some B18's as well. You put a turbo or NOS on a stock D17, and it won't last long.
By the time you beef up the motor sufficiently to handle boost or NOS, you may as well pick up a K20 or K24 to swap in. However, you will need an idler pulley relocation kit, as well as some wiring to make it work.
Just my .02. I'm sure you've heard of people boosting and NOS'ing stock D17's, but I'm also sure that they don't last long.

I've heard of people boosting these on a stock bottom end and getting about 300-330 HP, but yikes, they can't last long like that. That bottom end has to take a beating! I'm trying to find pics of the rods to show you a comparison. Probably get them up tomorrow.

LOL! Thanks hoss. Totally forgot about this thread. Not the pics I remembered, but most likely close enough. That rod on the left in the first pic, though, is an aftermarket Crower rod, compared to a factory rod on the right.

I feel your pain. I was severely disappointed after I did some research too. However, I will most likely just buy an older Honda and use that for my tuner instead.
Option C:
Get rid of pistons, get a used rotary off of CL and build that. Could build an NA rotary to put out lotsa power and fab the install probably for less than your turbo option.
I might be biased towards this though...

There are vids of a rail on you tube that has a three rotor tuebo putting down about 1300 Hp.
