I'm starting to do some research on what laptops i should look at for college next year. So far i'm thinking the Alienware Area-51 M15x with the nVidia 8700GT M video card, 2.4 GHz Core 2 duo processor, 4 jiggabyes of RAM, and everything else basic. It comes out to $1549
If anyone has any other suggestions on laptops around the same price with similar specs LMK!
Also, if anyone has any idea how the video card would compare to my 7950GT KO LMK. I would assume the 8700GT M would beat it up, but yeah.

Hrm. Personally, I get a laptop for school and build a rig for home. Unless you plan to play games in class and such.
You can pay FAR less for a nice laptop and get a very good gaming system for home. Gaming laptops = very low battery life and just the added heat of all that stuff in that small place puts un-needed stress on the components.
Alienware is also owned by Dell now. I'd check XPS if your going to stick with laptops.

word. i looked at XPS but you can't customize it to the specs i would want. i'm also looking for something to play on occasionally at college. i won't be bringing my desktop up there. nor do i have the funds to purchase 2 computers. if my situation were different i'd def build another desk though.

i REALLY wish it didn't have that ugly design on the cover. that is reason enough for me not to buy it lol. good find though for sure.
as far as the battery life and heat, if i'm just browsing the web or typing something up, will the battery life really be much less? I would assume it wouldn't heat up until i throw some games on it either. correct me if i'm wrong. never owned my own laptop before.

A friend of mine has an XPS I think... or something like that. Just on Firefox is gets hot as hell. If you try to play L4D, the processor gets so hot that the "zxc" area of the keyboard gets really hot to the touch. The battery on it is like 2 hours I think... that's with the "battery saver" mode on, too. Just bring your desktop and use a piece of paper to take notes.

wow that sucks hardcore. 2 hours will not be good especially if i don't have a break between classes. i wonder how the alienware battery life is... :alien:

thoughs on this? ^ seems like alienware is overpriced... unless there is something i'm missing?

I'm an Asus and a newegg fan, so I think that is good.
batterylife will depend directly on what battery you have installed. Most companies make larger batteries. My point was to get a 300-500 on a laptop (as I assumed its purpose would be paper writing and internet) and then use the remaining 1,000 to build a gaming rig (if your interested in gaming). If not and it really is just occasional. Just get a lower powered machine.
heat will be an issue on the faster laptops and they suck the battery down quickly.
I would get an atom processor or something that is very low on battery consumption and build a gaming rig. Just dock the laptop when your home and use the desktop while there. You could easily network the two and share all your files. That also gives you redundancy in the unlikely event of theft, or damage to one of them.

You are paying for a name with alienware but you are also getting top notch support. They have a different group of people for those instead of the standard Dell people. Still might be in India, but faster response. Asus is a tier1 manufacturer though. So they are more than likely building the boards that go into the alienware anyways.
More tomorrow, I need some sleep :P

The thing is, my parents wont let me bring a desktop up to school. I also don't think i'd be able to handle a laptop with lesser specs either. my sister's laptop has an AMD dual core and 2 GB of memory and it feels too slow.
Right now i'm thinking the alienware looks pretty good with an extra battery. I've been doing some reading on laptop graphics cards and the 8700M GT seems to be perfect for what i want to do.
and the alien is just super cool. :)
thanks for your input.

Ok, i can't sleep. Your sister's laptop may have vista on it. Vista and 2gb = the slowness.
Also, Intel > AMD in mobile processing.
Your cash, your decision, but I would search more. So many great laptops out there for less than that.
