As the taxes are going up the companies decided to increase per pack cost. Although they will lose some sales, they are going to more than make up for it with the extra price they put on it.

Cigs are inelastic meaning that price change does not directly effect the consumption.

TODAY ALTRIA GROUP (ticker: MO) announced significant list-price changes for its products driven by the April 1 changes in tobacco excise taxes and the attempt to return the premium smokeless products to about category growth: The cigarette price increases will go into effect on March 9, all other products on March 29.


After running a $1-per-can promotion in the Southeast for Copenhagen and Skoal in February and March, Altria is making the price reduction permanent. As all promotions for the brands are eliminated nationwide, the effective price reduction for consumers is about 40 cents per can, in line with the effect of the current Southeast promotion. By lowering the list price, Altria sets the moist-smokeless-tobacco price gap at about 50%-60% compared to the current 80%-100%.

On the way to Montreal, we stopped somewhere in Bumfuck, Vermont for snacks and whatnot. A girl we were with needed a pack for the weekend, it came out to $7.50. She was pissed. About an hour from the border.
