Nissan's VG and VQ motors are indeed tough motors. I've owned 3 different versions:

1986 Nissan 300zx Turbo, VG30ET, I could smoke similar years of the mustang cobras and z28's with that car (owned when I was 16)

1988 Nissan Hardbody VG30i (owned about 13 years) I beat that truck up, did just about anything a kid could do to a truck. Sold with about 200k miles on it, ran fine until it was totaled.

1989 Maxima VG30E, bought off my parents, they owned it for 14 years, I had it for about 1.5 years. Sold with about 220k miles.

The only one I had an issue with was the 300zx, wastegates seized shut, collapsed two pistons. Didn't even damage cylinder walls, I even limped the car home about 6 miles with the pistons gone.

yeah, mine was 2wd too, little beast would go just about anywhere. I got to know some of the tow truck drivers in the winter. I had Caa (think AAA but in Canada) We'd have to go through three or four fields to get to where I finally got stuck. They finally told me they wouldn't haul it out if I was that far in because they had trouble getting their trucks in to the spots.

Not like a rotary at all... Rotaries have some succeptibilities when you start doing major hp mods. They can take the abuse, but you gotta really know what you are doing so you don't get any detonation which can grenade an apex seal. Luckily an apex seal is a fairly easily replacable part even though it requires dismantling the engine... But also, rotaries don't typically require as much as pistons need in terms of adding power, they can make the power a little easier.

The vq's though, I have seen take A LOT of abuse and make the power. There is a vid on YouTube of a guy taking a TT vq35 on a dyno, and hooking up a nitrous kit with no jets installed, just straight from the bottle... Motor blew after it put down about 1300 hp at the wheels...

Last time I changed my plugs I didn't torque one spark plug enough and it was loose... and thus leaking oil. I drove that for at least 2k miles... and my engine's asking for more. :fyi:

Check the first gen forums at rx7club.com glock... Port it, pin it, boost it, you can EASILY get them in the low tens... The bastard only weighs 2300 pounds, it doesn't need much power to get fast...

Hell, the worlds fastest se3p has the smaller motor (1.2l) and it runs the quarter mile in 6 seconds... There are dd fb's with moderate porting in the 10 second 1/4 mile... AND, they can go around corners fast ;)
