Well, if your'e walking, and you see a car, you can jump out of the way. If oyu're riding a bike, odds are you can't move quick enough. So, if you're riding with traffic, if you get it, since you're moving forward, it lessens the blow.
Just my logic at work.

Even biking it's better to be on the opposite side of the road, the problem arises when you have a right hand turn (from the car's perspective)
The car pulls over to the right shoulder to prepare to turn, the biker loses his lane and goes straight into the car. If not for that one potentially very dangerous situation, it would be better for a biker to be going against traffic as well.

Walk with traffic so that when they hit you you fall in a more natural position and will go under the car. If you are walking against the traffic your knees dont bend that way and it will be more difficult for the car to go over you, plus, you might jump over the car and that just wont be good.
On a Bike go against the traffic, because lets just face it. You arent in a fucking car...
