So here's a step by step guide to get your phone working (make
sure you have a working wifi connection available to you before
beginning this):

1) Remove SIM Card
2) Connect iPhone to itunes via USB cable
3) If it asks you to set it up as a new phone that's fine, click ok.
Don't sync anything though.
4) Click restore from the info tab. This will re-install the
software onto the iphone.
5) After your phone has rebooted it will ask you to connect the
iphone to itunes for activation. Instead of activating we will
jailbreak it instead. on your computer, go to blackra1n.com and download(to desktop) the
jailbreaking software for your machine (click on the mac or
windows logo)
6) Unzip the folder and launch the blackra1n application.
7) Click the make it rain button. This will install the jailbreaking
software and you will see a picture flash onto your iphone and
then reboot. The application will display a message on your
computer when it has completed its installation.
8) After your iPhone has been jailbreaked it will reboot and the
activation screen should be gone allowing you to use your
iPhone. In order to download the unlocking software you need to
connect to your wifi. You can do this on the iphone by going to
'settings>Wi-Fi' and entering in your wifi credentials.
9) Now you need to turn off your auto-lock option so the iPhone
doesn't go to sleep while you're trying to unlock it. The default
setting is '1 minute'. Change it to 'never'
10) We can now download the unlocking software to the phone.
Tap the blackra1n app to launch it.
11) Tap 'Cydia' and then hit the install button in the upper right
12) This will install the Cydia app for you. Cydia is a program
that allows you to download and install apps that you won't find
in the itunes app store for one reason or another. After Cydia
has been installed launch it.
13) Cydia will ask you for some installation options. Just click
the default and easy/GUI options.
14) After it has finished installing its updates relaunch it and
click the search tab on the bottom
15) Search for 'bootneuter'. It should come up in your search
results. Tap it and install it.
16) After 'bootneuter' has been installed tap on it to launch it.
17) It will detect the settings of the phone when you launch it.
Give it time. After it finishes its detection set the options to
Version 4.6 Neuter ON FakeBlank OFF Unlock ON. Then click
Flash in the upper right.
18) BootNeuter will give you some warnings about needing to
reboot. Just hit ok. It will then flash a new bootloader, unlocking
your phone in the process.
19) After your phone reboots relaunch BootNeuter again and try
to flash it again. It should give you a message saying that the
settings are current and that a flash isn't necessary. This way
you know it worked correctly and you don't need to do anything.
20) Turn off your phone and put in your SIM card.
21) Boot up your phone and the SIM card should be recognized
and you'll be ready to go to make calls.

I'm on Tmobile also and have been considering jumping on one but a 2G is the only thing in my price range.

Is there much of a difference or do you loose anything going with the 2G on Tmobile? You just have a basic plan + data?

2G is all you need to afford. Its on the EDGE network. Dont know of anyone working with Tmobiles 3G as their 3G coverage is minimal at this point.

So in short, unless you have 3G already, you dont lose a thing.

Upgraded to 3.1.3 after seeing a Spirit jailbreak not realizing this did not include 'unlocking' it for T-Mobile :(

+1 for this, after I finally downgraded back to 3.1.2 it worked smooth as butter :)

See now if y'all would have made an iPhone dedicated section like I asked this thread probably would have helped much sooner. Or something.

What did you use to jailbreak 3.1.3? Couldn't find anything for it other than Sprint jb.

I was phoneless so I was in kind of a rush, don't think there are any real benefits to upgrading that I know of.

On another note the guy I got mine from had upgraded the battery, I'd say I get at least double what we get for time out of your old one.

Prob gonna look into upgrading hers soon as I get some more info.

Yep
you should torrent your apps then manually push them. Basically keep them in a folder you know of apps you will need or want when you re jailbreak.
On another note don't bother updating to 3.1.3. The only changes done to the os were minor bugs. Nothing really exciting worth really needing.
Wait for 4.0. Then you may not even need to jailbreak it.
