Rockford Corporation and Best Buy End 10-Year Relationship in Car Audio

A strategic shift in sales strategy

TEMPE, Ariz., Jan. 25 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Rockford Corporation announced today that it plans to discontinue shipping its Rockford Fosgate line of car audio products and accessories to big box retailer Best Buy. Operations between the two organizations are planned to wind down in May 2010.

Bill Jackson, Rockford's president, commented: "The mobile electronics business has changed significantly in the 10 years since we started our relationship with Best Buy. When we began selling Rockford Fosgate products at Best Buy in 2000, we believed Best Buy would help us build our brand and increase consumer awareness of the car audio category.

Over the last ten years we have had a strong run at Best Buy. We have enjoyed working with Best Buy and having them represent our products in the marketplace."

Mr. Jackson continued, "Today, the car audio marketplace is more mature and Rockford's strategy does not align with Best Buy. The decision to part ways marks a strategic shift in direction for the Rockford Fosgate brand and allows us to focus even more directly on building our lead in the premium mobile audio category. Our strategy for 2010 and beyond is to focus on growing our brands in specialty channels and regional A/V retailers. We will continue to invest in technology, developing high-end OEM solutions and expanding our reach with new product categories."

Rockford's 2010 CES Dealer New Product Showcase gave its dealers insight about where Rockford is going as it celebrates 30 years selling premium car audio products. With over 13,000 square feet of exhibit space at the Palms ballroom, Rockford was the buzz in the mobile audio category.

"Our most successful CES presence to date, the experience re-enforced our direction in the industry. Our retailers have responded with an increase in sales orders compared to last year's CES," noted Dan Mcleod, Director of Specialty Accounts.

Geared up to take advantage of the new market landscape, Rockford launched over 40 new products including several new industry changing technologies in amplifiers, specifically Constant Power, Full Range AD and BRT (boosted rail technology). The Rockford Team also revealed PUNCH PLUGS, in-ear monitors, and RFDJ a passive 2-way professional loudspeaker that catapults Rockford into two new categories of product with natural brand extensions.

"This year at CES we've launched an entirely new campaign called 'Expect the Unexpected.' This all-encompassing plan includes investment in class leading technologies, expansion into new product categories and marketing initiatives designed to engage and activate consumers for our retailers, OEM partners and international markets," said David Slepak, Rockford Corporation Sr. Marketing Manager.

Rockford Corporation is a designer, marketer and distributor of high-performance audio systems for the mobile audio aftermarket, personal audio, professional audio and for the OEM automotive, marine and trailer applications. Rockford's mobile audio products are marketed primarily under the Rockford Fosgate(R), Rockford Acoustic Design(TM) and Lightning Audio(R) brand names.

This is VERY important you read this. Eclipse just did the same thing, completely pulling out of aftermarket sales altogether to the consumer and going directly to the car manufacturer.

If this trend continues the only thing left to buy on the shelves will be Sony, Kenwood, and Pioneer. While some of you think you'll just go to a mom and pop audio shop and get your specialty brand, as a former car audio store owner I'll let you in on a not-so-secret........ mom and pop shop can;t sell specialty merchandise all day and stay in business. They have to sell these bullshit big box brands for quick profit and turn around to be able to sell the specialty shit. If all that is out there is big box brands, the mom and pop shop can't sell them for what best buy can so they are FUCKED and won't be there to sell you your specialty brands either.

This recent move of two of the largest brand out there to OEM direct auto manufacturer ONLY sales is something you need to pay attention to.

Doesn't bother me a bit. That aftermarket stereo segment is shrinking. Shops can't make it? Sucks, but oh well. Offer more services or go under.

Rockford sucks dick. Most people buy Kicker, Pioneer, or Alpine to begin with anyways. I'm not worried about it.

That's all fine and dandy. And imo, they are good products, BUT they are extremely overpriced. Extremely. And I hate how in Charleston, because this hole-in-the-wall shop that happens to be the biggest one in town is a Rockford dealer, it's the only thing that the fuckers around here talk about.

When they went to the Ewok looking fuckin amps was when they went all 100% surface mount in their amps.

See below:

So to review.... eggshell = rockford. Ewok = Weaker all surface mount design, high failure rate and the beginning of the downfall.

the .2 versions (ex- 150a2 = ghey ......however...... 150.2 = hawt) were considered respectable in power output, but still high failure rate.

FunnAy to watch people collect old school stuff and not know what they are paying for. Persons on DIYmobileaudio are paying out the ASS for PPi Sedona amps and we used to prop them against the doors to stop them from closing. That was their only use. So to quote my siggy on another forum "that's not old school, It's just old."

I got a pair of 12's from like 1999 2000 400wrms. over all Ide have to say they were really decent for what i paid for them and how long they lasted. In fact they still work till this day just siting on a shelf in my garage along with 2 pioneer 760's

02-03-2010, 12:07 AM
I have about 180 pairs of them....... in my back room ten years ago. I still have my dealers order book for manufacturer pricing to all the vendors. We could buy that shit so cheap you could choose to get a lightning comp set or go to lunch on the same money. No joke. I'll have to dig it up now.......
