Anyone play one? I was thinking of acquiring FSX but wondering if it is a PITA to learn.

lol

It's kind of a gay game I know but I sit at my computer hours upon hours doing nothing might as well be flying someplace in the background or at least until I get bored.

I used to do it a ton too. Always wanted the nice controls too, instead of just a keyboard.

I would go for a pilots license, but learning how to land is not a must for me.

friend of mine had a joystick he paid like $100+/- for to play flight simulators

Land? By land, do you mean, aim the nose of the plane at an object you wish to destroy?

Yeah something like this though it makes no sense having a shitty little monitor like that.. I have dual 19" LCDs and I believe the game can take advantage of both.

Have a wraparound with 3 36" lcd's... would be nice.

I know previous versions could handle multiple monitors....

That looks like a Saitek set, my dad had an older version that was stick and a separate throttle. it held up real well. they bought a new computer with vista and now they can't find drivers for it.

FSX is okay. It's not that hard to learn, honestly. If you're using the keyboard, it can be a bit clumsy. I have a nice joystick set, with joy stick and throttle on different bases. (Saitek X45 or some shit). It's honestly, just boring. The graphics, even maxed out, weren't that good to enjoy the scenery... so it ends up becoming more of a chore. They do have a military-type expansion that I wanted to try out... but not worth wasting like 20 gigs of my HD for.

We fly model planes...we don't do that BS simulation. I want to see MSFT simulate store seperation at mach 4.

Get a good flight stick, that's for sure. I used to play them and have a nice Saitek, but haven't in probably 2 years. I think they are fun in a relaxing manner.

I used to play flight simulator 98 at my friends house, he actually became a pilot and yeah he used to kick my ass in those games. fun times.

I downloaded FSX played with it for about an hour crashing and shit and gave up on it. Seems fun but I don't have the attention span to sit down and spend hours learning it.

This. It's really realistic, though. I used to know someone who was a pilot and he said he played it every now and then. I don't know why... he flies real planes, but wants to fly fake ones on his down time...? Hah.

Could be useful for IFR simulation and the like. Certainly cheaper than renting real time...

Still waiting for real Flight Sim with "real" store seperation issues properly accounted for.

What kind of store separations are you going to have to account for with a Cessna 182 at 110 kts or so :) Do they come with drop tanks now :D

No, but we worry about other planes. I think Cessna is a private plane. If you read, you know what I work.

Mach 6 is still pretty damn fast, though...

Or should I stop before the black helicopters show up :D

He didn't rent... he was a full-time passenger jet pilot. I.E. Boeings and big ass planes.

Like how a Cessna could defy the laws of physics?

We use flight sims for:

#1. non-IFR rated students when weather is nasty. They really need to practice.

#2. IFR students to practice heavy weather flying.

#3. because the newer sim's terrain is accurate, getting then familiar with local obstacles.

The sim unit we used updated real time with weather conditions and terrain changes(towers, etc)
