Thought you guys might find this interesting. The newest hi-res mp3 format is coming out.
ONE OF THE OUTFITS BEHIND THE MP3 FORMAT, Thompson, has developed a backward-compatible, lossless, high definition MP3 format for the next generation of music.
Full details of the format can he seen at All4MP3.com or MP3HD.com, where you can also find an evaluation encoder that will allow users to create MP3HD files out of 16-bit, 44.1-KHz-encoded stereo WAV files.
Thomson has also created an MP3HD WinAmp plug-in for Windows to play the files back as part of the same package.
A four-minute song encoded at 876 kbit/s will equate to 26 Mbytes, according to Thomson. µ

Honestly i dont understand why you wouldn't just use the raw .wav files if you're going to be using that much space anyway.

That much space for how much of an improvement on quality? Seems like a lot to be worth it.

key here is backwards compatible and mp3 is the most commonly used codec.

It may be the next 'standard' but I think at this point a straight mp3 is still the best bet until they start making 1TB ipods and headunits that can read DVD's. Most of my music just goes boom boom anyway so I can hardly tell the difference in the two

Even a 2gb shuffle could hold ~ 70 songs (based on the 29mb claim). Not a horrible quantity depending on how often you dump and reload.
*gasp* say it isn't so. You can't the difference between lower and higher compression rates? This is really important to me as the headphones I use really pick up on the different rates. I really want a SQ version of the ipod.

Oh jeez, let's not let this turn into an Apple Vs. Microsoft thread. :fp: Always the same arguments!

ha ha ha...true enough.
The Zune is ok, but I do like the ipod better. Is the ipod the best creation of all time? Hell to the no, but its small, holds a good amount of music and sounds alright doing it. New shuffle is tiny as hell.
I searched newest ipod on google and this came up, whats wrong with people :squint:
