So my son is young, really young (coming up on 6 months) but I keep thinking about how it seems like yesterday he was born and now he is already this big. School won't be that far off.

Did any of you attend private school? Or better yet, both private and public? What were your personal thoughts. Do any of you have children in private schools? I went to a private school when I was VERY young pre-school and some while visiting my dad every summer in California. Mostly I was in a public school. Right now I'm pretty set on private. I'm just torn on catholic or just standard private. Actually there are tons of options to consider. Price will be an issue but I think I could swing 250 a week.

Thoughts, opinions?

Growing up we had a catholic school and I always found it odd that they were just as big of fuckups selling drugs, stealing cars and slutty girls as those of us in public school.

Plus I also think going to a private school you may use it as a way to 'protect' them from shit that goes on which sounds like a good idea in theory but I think in reality you are probably better off letting them into the 'real world' and being subjected to everything that is out there and guiding them rather than acting like it does not exist and them finding out for themselves.

I would imagine the education at private school is probably better though but I always thought the main reason parents sent their kids was to shelter them which I think any parent would probably want to do.

I attended a Christian Private school from Kindergarten to about Third Grade, then went to Public school for the rest of my life.
I don't really think it's worth it, honestly. A child will learn as much as he or she wants to. The "incentive" system in my schools was "if you don't learn this, you get hit" basically. It didn't work well for me. I got expelled from 3 Christian Private schools for questioning the faith / acting out... but I'm not a bad kid. I just had certain questions that they refused to answer.

As well as higher level of schooling, a friend of mine attended a mostly-girl's Christian school (there were only a few guys. It must've been heaven for them.) She's now attending the same community college I am. Also, another friend of mine went to a Private school, and he joined the army and his friend is now attending a community college in Jacksonville...
So, for the most part, all the people I know that've graduated from a Private School hasn't really been met by success.

The best you can do, I think, is try to teach the importance of intelligence to your kid so they want to learn.

Well, here's a funny story about "protecting their kids." A friend of mine mentioned in a previous post wasn't into drugs / alcohol at all through out middle school/most of ninth grade (she switched to Private school in the middle of 9th.) Now she drinks more than anyone I've seen, and she does mad coke. So much so that she stole from her cousin to get a few bumps. LOL@HER.

I used to know this hot catholic chick who went to a catholic private school. She went from K-8th grade. 9th-12th grade or high school was all public.

She got the itch to try out the black snake in 9th grade. Got knocked-up by the RND the same year. Her life went down hill fast.

Thanks for the input.

My reasoning for bringing him to a private school is because I feel like our system does not give enough finances to schooling any longer. Some schools have to ask for money for paper or they just don't have it.

I do agree that if a kid is going to be well a kid, its going to happen. I believe its up to the parents to guide their children not the education system. Education needs to educate.

Eh. I guess. Honestly, most of grade school is just teaching children obedience... there are not many practical skills they will learn in Grade School. The ball gets rollin' in College. That's when they learn important stuff. At least, IMO.

The right situation in the right private school can put them in a good position down the road for other opportunities, in school and in business. My personal opinion is that you should keep them a long ways away from any religious school.

I think it depends primarily on just how bad the public schools in your area are. If they are bad enough, then a private school may be worth it without much regard as to how good the private school is.

The public schools we have sent our kids to have been pretty good.

One thing that might surprise you is that, at least around here, teachers are actually paid a good bit less in private schools.

Well here in lies my main problem. I live in Reynoldsburg Ohio. School is just par. I'm moving towards work to Grove city in 5 years (much MUCH better public school) and some nice private there too. But for pre-school I need to figure something out. So this will be 3 1/2-5.

I went to a private school from 6th to 12th grade - secular, though.

Very interesting group.

Taught me many a lesson about that demographic.

I've had friends in home and private school. They just didn't turn out...right. 5th grade is definitely the latest you want to keep them in private school.

In TN we have magnet schools (which are publix) which seperate the smary kids from the riff-raff.

School for academically gifted kids. The curriculum is much more rigorous than public schools. In TN, magnet schools can't touch private schools in "reach" for colleges, etc. The private schools just have not developed the networking.

I spent about half of my school in private and the other in public. I went to a very preppy private high school school in Augusta Georgia. I always thought I was missing out and transferred my senior year of high school back into public school. That's when I realized I had met some of the craziest people in my life in private school. When people grow up with that much money, I'm talking millions upon millions, they are either extremely weird or crazy such as drugs and partying. People who say that private school is not the real world or completely ignorant and have not been exposed to both settings. There is still sex, drugs, cheating, fighting.......The only thing I could think of that would be different is that some of the people have never had not so rich freinds and therefore become very cocky and rude to anyone that is lower in the class system than themselves.

Your logic is flawed. I grew up without money and I'm very cocky and rude to anyone that is lower in the class system than myself.

that is a comical outlook on what I said but my main point was that the difference is not as big as some people think it is. Just b/c you go to private school does not mean you will be a timid person that's not ready for "the real world"

There is a HUGE difference between coke heads and meth heads. Crack is wack. The only difference is that rich people can afford good drugs where the general public get second hand.

Whitney Houston is proof.

My girlfriend went to a private Catholic school from K-8 then public high school. She enjoyed private, fits in well with everyone despite her private schooling, has high grades, etc. She did say she was learning the math that they were teaching her in 10th grade, back in 7th grade in private school.
