I was testing some permissions and must have never turned it off.
We're good for cash now I can cover the server, only thing we would need money for a vb upgrade which is hopefully never... unless you like the way CA runs now.

Only in our eyes. However, a case could be made to the contrary. If I leave my front door wide open, does it make it alright to come in and take my TV?
Technically you are still using property without authorization, so it still technically falls under theft. I doubt anything would ever come of it unless you used the connection to do more illegal activity though.

Under these assumptions, if you go to someones home and they have a plate of cookies out on the coffee table, and you take one, you are stealing?

I would call it stealing a service was property.

Technically sure, but I mean cmon. Which if you read, my post implied what you are driving at.
I do believe stealing someones bandwidth is a little more offensive than taking a cookie from them but neither one is that big of a deal. Much like piracy, it is at a level I am comfortable with.

I see where you are going with this, but I think I have a better example...
Instead of longhorn, you should have said starbucks, and instead of mints/toothpicks you should have said sweetener/swizzlesticks.
I say this because (usually) at starbucks they have free wifi, as a courtesy to their customers, as well as sweeteners and stir sticks, as a courtesy to their customers. Of course after typing this I realize that I may have inadvertantly blown a hole in your argument.

ha ha ha....i'm just talking to talk, honestly.
My position on wifi access has always been as follows:
If it is open, use it. Do NOT invade their network, do NOT use large amount of bandwidth, you are being given a gift.
If it is secure, it is secure for a reason and you should not break it.

Average speed in the U.S. is still around 5mb, yar? You are not going to be impacted or notice if someone is webbrowsing on your connection if it is that or higher.

Perhaps you only steal my TV while I sleep. It is alright because I am not being impacted.

Exactly!
Even if I stole your TV, would you know? Would it matter? You are going to pay a set rate each month based on a package, not based on usage.

To some it does still matter. It is still unauthorized usage. In mine and your eyes this is innocent, to others it isn't. Technically they would be right though.

This would be true, if I had purchased the sun and installed it in the neighborhood without protection.
bro, its not stealing if the network is unprotected.
I think we need to stop those bits and ask them for their papers.
