View Full Version : Help me pick out a vehicle

Captain Ahab

I have driven my '95 Chevorlet Blazer since I got my license. It currently has 187k miles and a steady income in the fall will allow me to afford a new vehicle.

My parents were going to get me something but I know they wouldn't be willing to spend more than like $4k. I am something a bit better. I think I can talk them into taking that $4k and putting it as a down payment.

I want the price cap to be around $10k.

Here is the type of vehicles I like.

SUVS or full sized trucks. The trucks must be extended cab or 4-door. Doesn't have to be four-wheel drive.

I have not kept up with vehicles and honestly don't know shit about them.

GO GO GO~!!!!!!!!!

Can get a full size chevy or ford for that budget. Take your pic as to which one you want, they are both more or less the same when you get down to it.

If you can find a Nissan Titan for that price range, that right there is the king of full size trucks IMO.

What is wrong with the Blazer?

I'd probably save more, but I don't like the idea of having a car payment.

I would say an F-150, and im pretty sure glock would agree with me on this

lol

My dad had a F-150 when I was a preteen/early teen and I liked it.

He has another F-150 4-door and I LOVE it. But he has had a lot of problems with it and is selling it.

What is wrong with the Blazer?

I'd probably save more, but I don't like the idea of having a car payment.

Right now it takes 2 or 3+ tries every time to crank it.

Have had to put a new fuel injector spider thing in it, a new transmission, a new alternator, a new starter, and numerous other things over the past few years.

I would say an F-150, and im pretty sure glock would agree with me on this

I am thinking this. I want a 4-door but IDK if I could afford one.

I figure I can put a 15" on one side if get a 4-door.

You would be financing $6,000. What ever rate you get would be the percentage of that number each year for your finance charge added to the premium and divided among the term of the loan.

Captain Ahab
06-21-2010, 12:10 PM
I have no fucking clue what the rates are though.

I have never had payments on anything before.

Look on your bank's website, they should have rates posted. Will likely have a calculator too.

You may have to ask. They'll need to run your credit. The best thing in your case would be to get a co-signer, since it'll most likely be very high.

Go to your bank or credit union and just ask str8 up. You dont want to finance through the dealership.

Typically american banks that i frequent dont now. Since we had this whole credit crisis and such.

Captain Ahab

Co-signer would be my parents.

They have like top notch credit if that matters.

Be aware that some banks won't even want to finance vehicles if they're not in a certain year/age range.
May end up turning into a personal loan, and a personal loan with 6-10k is a little more difficult to get.

If you or your parents are with a credit union I'd go with them over a regular bank. Usually get better rates. With not knowing the rate, I would guess your payment would be 150-200 a month on a $6,000 loan.

Captain Ahab

Shit, if I can keep payments around $300 or so I may get a more expensive vehicle.

Shit, if I can keep payments around $300 or so I may get a more expensive vehicle.

before the economy hit the shitter, i had a credit score of like 650, with 1 credit card and a 1000 limit. had 1 bellsouth bill that was backed up. when i went to buy my car i dropped 3k on the civic that had a sticker price of 15000. i left the dealer with my car but an 18.6% interest rate and monthly payments of like 370mo.. this was all with no cosigner.
i needed the car and had to build up my credit so i payed the car for 9 months, then went to my credit union and refinanced it. they dropped my credit down to 9%... my monthly payments dropped to 330 and i stayed with the same remaining amount of months to pay off my car. even though my payments didn't change too much, most of the money in each payment goes towards the car instead of interest. in the 9 months of paying the car only about 1500 dollars dropped from the actual car. the rest was all eaten up by interest.
i still haven't refinanced it a second time and i won't. i'll leave it at 9%, the good part, my credits in the 760's.. i have 3 credit cards and 2 online payment options with dell and newegg. never late with any payments.
with your parents cosigning, i'm pretty sure you can get a much lower interest rate percentage and be able to go for a car that cost a bit more than 10k while staying in the 300 mo/ range.

Any ideas for something that may actually get better gas mileage than my Blazer? It only gets about 18mpg.

i agree. i couldnt get any bank to give me a loan. i joined a credit union and the same day took out an auto loan for ~16k.

fuck regular banks. wouldnt touch me even though i had minimum debt and a 728 credit score. interest rate is at 4.99, and could of been a 4.49 if i went with a newer vehicle and still 1% better than nissan would of given me.

Yes, anything except for a full sized truck or SUV...

I believe that the hybrid chevy's or the ones with active cylinder management might be out of your price range.

lol stay the fuck away from a tahoe if you want good mileage... mine gets around 14mpg. the '07 i was driving with cylinder management was getting about 17 average.

The blazer's suck up alot more gas than that as they have a rather large v6 engine. I'm lucky if I get 18mpg. They're rated at 15mpg in town and 18mpg hwy

Do you pay your own insurance? I doubt you do.... BUT if you do, you'll also need to factor in the full coverage that you'll have to pay

Nah I don't.

And I completely forgot about factoring in insurance.
