View Full Version : Should shoppers be taxed

For using plastic and/or paper bags instead of reusable bags?
If so, should they be taxed equally?
IamDeMan

I think they should be taxed and that more tax be placed on the use of plastic bags. People need incentive to move toward the use of reusable bags.

I think people that willingly select plastic should be drug out to the street and shot. People that use reusable bags are cool. It’s okay to be a hippy if you don't mind me snickering at you while we're in line. I prefer paper. Better for the environment all the way around.
What a weird fucking question anyhow. Are you writing a paper on grocery store educate?

How is paper a better choice all around?
It takes more energy to produce and recycle paper. It uses valuable forestry resources. It could be argued that the effects from paper bag production are equally harmful to that of plastic.
I don't mind the snickers. My cloth reusable bags are dope as shit.
Why can't I ask thoughtful questions without an agenda? No I am not writing any paper that has to do with this subject. Just read a story about it while researching a different issue lol.

Did I say shit about the paper being recycled? Both kinds of bags can be used multiple times. The difference is that the plastic bags eventually find their way to a landfill and there they remain for centuries. A paper bag disenigrates.

Fuck, they tax bags, I'll go bagless. Course I'm not paying taxes on goods right now anyhow. Won't do it until I get my goberment cheese that is due to me.

It isn't just recycling. Way to address what was after the "and", troll. They take a larger amount of energy just to produce. Coming from California, I expect you to hate anything that uses too much energy. My cloth bags can be reused hella more than your paper.
Nancy is not my grandmothers name.
It isn't being discussed here, although cities in your shithole state have outright banned plastic. There is a tax on plastic bags in Ireland. I think taxing it is a lot better than banning it like your ban happy state seems to think.

What 'and'? I am legitimately giving you an honest response. This is no troll. Plastic bags are fail. They fill landfills and kill baby kittens. I don't come from SoCal, so opinions on the matter are not as you'd expect. I'm all for banning plastic bags. That would be funny.
So keep it up nut muffin. I'll show you ban happy. :bootyshake:

I don't like incentive based taxes. If everyone all at once decided to quit using plastic bags, the programs once funded by these taxes do not disappear, the government finds a new revenue stream.
Like I said, tax the bags, it isn't going to make me stop using them unless they tax them too high. Then I will just use my hands.

I was fairly certain the last time that I reviewed this debate that there was no clear cost-benefit analysis done between paper and plastic; there was no consensus, either, but media seemed to be about 2/3 pro-plastic 1/3 pro-paper..
Regardless, I use re-usable bags when grocerying. If I don't have the bags with me at another store, I just refuse a bag altogether.
Personally, I am not for the tax. I would prefer that the companies let the consumer choose; despite mass stupidity, my experiences thus far have indicated that the majority are at least interested in re-usable bags, and with continued education I think that will trend up as well.

I get plastic bags. I use them for trash bags and reuse them all the time around my apartment for various things.
Typically plastic bags get 2 or 3 uses before I throw them out. So meh... All you liberals can recycle and I'll keep just doing what I do. ;)

I reuse them for carrying lunch to work so I do get mutiple uses out of them but usually toss them. I would be willing to pay like a .10 cent tax per bag as I would probably only have to buy like a dozen once and a few others over a year to have enough.
Personally I prefer a paper + plastic setup for my groceries but my closest market does not even carry paper anymore :(

You take a great deal of pride in wasting resources. That is fucking stupid. Whether you believe in man's role in the climate or not is irrelevant; there is no reason to intentionally avoid minimizing harm and maximizing efficiency if possible, but to you it is about some stupid ideological battle that is, as yet, inconclusive.

A lot of the deforestation in tropical regions is a result of developing countries clearing space for homes. I think the biggest concern there is the substantial amount of medicine that we are losing.

Are you arguing is that much more efficient to purchase extra trash bags and cat litter bags? I don't think so. Because many people reuse those bags for a variety of things, it isn't as wasteful as you would imagine. If those things are banned, now I have to purchase a bag to throw away.
