Here in a month or so, I'm going to be shopping for a new phone and plan. I currently have AT&T and its nice because I've got service everywhere. However, pretty much everything else about it blows ass. I don't want a gay ass iFail.

Verizon is nice because they've also got coverage and 3G everywhere, but holy hell their service is expensive.

Sprint is cheap and they have 4G, but their coverage sucks ass.

So do I want the company who makes people miserable, the company that's way too expensive, or the company with no coverage?

I also wanna get an Android-based phone. But I'm pretty much clueless as to what's good and what's not.

All about your area. I'm pretty sure you can go to each site & build a plan.. do that, compare prices, you've answered your own question.

Well I'm in Jacksonville, so the coverage is good with everyone. If I'm going by price and hardware alone, I'd probably go with an Evo from Sprint.

Good phone? Yesnomaybe?

I plan on getting the Evo as soon as I'm comfortable enough switching services.. it's a great phone, but just like anything now-a-days, there will be something better within a month or 2..

It's all about what you like doing bro. I'm not gonna hop on the Apple or Android nuts & try to sway you one way or another.. but Android seems to be on it's shit right nao.

I think Sprint coverage is very good. Definitely an improvement from previous years. I'd suggest giving them a second chance. My co-worker had AT&T and just switched to Sprint. He was skeptical at first, but decided to go anyway. He's very happy with his service. He also bought the HTC EVO.

Ok, having 500 minutes + unlimited talk and text for $59 a month is pretty pimptacular on tmobile. I could get a Nexus One, too.

hmmmmmmmmmm

How's tmobile's (3g) coverage in your experience?

Currently, on a busy month, I might use 150 minutes.

My push for that is that I'd use Skype or SipDroid with Google Voice as my main calling plan. Call over WiFi or 3G data. Hell SipDroid will even let you call over Edge (though the quality is terrible). Fuck using your minutes.

Meh, I used a total of 200 minutes last month.. and almost 5000 texts.

Yeah, my calls typically last 30 seconds or less. I used 3200 texts last month :D

Werd. Small minute package, unlimited text.. or get an almost nonexistent minute package & try what Atoz said (assuming you're going Android). Money saved.

Did you check the coverage map with Sprint? I dropped Verizon for them and got the Evo and I have no regrets. I left Nextel/Sprint some years back b/c they had shit coverage, but it seem like Sprint has gotten it together, no dropped calls to this date and I have never lost a signal or gone into roaming.

Coverage maps are bullshit. They fill in all the small towns that they don't actually cover.. I happen to be in one of these smalls towns that Sprint & AT&T claim to "cover" with 3G.. I have to drive to Lafayette or surrounding cities to even consider 3G.

Well he can go to Sprint, get an Evo for thirty days and if he doesn't like it or the coverage happens to suck he can take it back for a full refund.

I'm feeling getting a Nexus One on Tmobile and paying $59 a month for unlimited text and web. Although I do like the MyTouch slide because I like an actual keyboard.

I took the plunge b/c the wife and I wanted to get smart phones but I wasn't about to pay Verizon $60 a month just for data on two phones on top of whatever plan we got and even more money for texting. Plus I get a 23% discount with Sprint vs the 10% I was getting with Verizon.

Or bitch at Sprint enough, and they will send you a Airrave for your house.

This! I might just do it for the hell of it even though my signal is fine at the house. :wiggle:

On a side note atoz, what rom/kernal are you using on your Hero? My wife has one and its a bit on the sluggish side b/c she has so much shit on it.

I'm using a highly modified port of the MyTouch 3G Slide ROM with my own Kernal. It's overclocked to 768 mHz currently. Very aggressive lowmemkill settings. No lag, or sluggishness at all. I can make her one. Tell me what she uses the most and what stock stuff she doesn't use at all. I'll customize it for her. She would need to be rooted.

Problem with the kernal is that BT isn't reliable, and since it's from a T-Mobile phone, you'll get issues with voicemail. I use GV so I don't see the issues.

I will get back to you on that, she is already having blue tooth issue out the box for some reason. I thinks it user error (woman use) but I will see what she uses the most over the weekend so she can stop bitching about the phone. I told her to get a damn Evo and she doesn't want it........ungrateful.

Completely different phones really... the Slide is much inferior in terms of processor, memory, etc...

Ok, so here's what I'm thinking.

Sprint has the unlimited data + unlimited text + 450 minutes for $69 a month.

I could either get a Hero for $79 or splurge and get an Evo for $200.

Opinions?

I'm going to get it as soon as I get my first paycheck, because my POS phone just broke

Go big or go home. Get the EVO so you can come in here EMO in 2 weeks bitching about its battery life.

jmanpc
07-05-2010, 09:27 PM
Battery life isn't a huge deal since I'll use it... like a normal phone mostly. Anything will die if you use it heavily all day. So long as itll stay on all day, i'm fine.

I know I'm late as fuck and you're leaning towards Sprint but...

I get great coverage. But I'm also near Chicago most of the time. I won't say I've never dropped a call or not had service but it has happened a few times. And by few I seriously mean like 3 or 4 in the last 3 years in my area.

Set up toggles on one screens or put them in a folder for wifi, bluethooth, screen brightness, whatever else and use them as needed. It'll do a lot to save the battery. I'm sure with that stuff off when its just sitting in your pocket for hours you'll be fine to go all day.

sprint is FTW. check to see if you can get a corporate discount too, and remember that if you get the EVO you have to pay an extra $10 a month for the 4G service... i priced one and it came out to just about $52 a month with my corporate discount.
