[QUOTE]Hardcore Vette enthusiasts will recall that the LS7 and LS9 engines in the Corvette Z06 and ZR1 are hand-built in the metro Detroit area, meaning they’re touched and assembled by a real person’s hands rather than a series of robots. Now, buyers of the 2011 Z06 and ZR1 can opt to partake in that construction, building their very own V-8 as part of the Corvette Engine Build Experience.
The new program is more than just a marketing gimmick. Customers start with a bare engine block and install pistons, manifolds, and everything else necessary for a functioning motor. No need to worry if you’re not the most technically-savvy person, a GM technician shepherds the customer through the process so your hand-built engine will be just as reliable (and powerful) as any other. At the completion of the build, the customer’s name is affixed to a plaque on the engine—how’s that for bragging rights at cruise nights?—and the powerplant is sent to the Corvette assembly plant in Kentucky to be installed in the customer’s car.
The Performance Build Center (PBC) option must be chosen when a customer orders a 2011 Z06 or ZR1, tacking on $5800 to the car’s purchase price. The price includes food, lodging, and local transportation, but customers must pay for travel to and from Detroit, Michigan.
And if getting your hands dirty with your new machine doesn’t appeal, Chevrolet also has programs catering to the whims of other Corvette buyers. A customer can follow his or her new car along the assembly line at the assembly plant in Kentucky, or take delivery of a new car at the National Corvette Museum. Buyers of the ZR1 can also elect a complimentary high-performance driving school to help them learn the car’s performance characteristics. All are pretty cool ways to get intimate with this high-performance machinery.

Somehow I don't think 99.9% of people dropping 100k on a vet or even a z06 give a shit about being involved in building their engine, maybe they think the challenge of making in out of Detroit will appeal to some?

i think it's a gimick to get white people into buying vettes just cause of the experience and knowledge they learn so they at least have some engine related knowledge to show off to honda owners..
those people that drop 100k on a vette do care about what they got.. it's those that buy high end bimmers, lambos and those other luxery cars that don't give a rats ass. all they really care about is the fucking umbrella in the door..

If I had the cash to buy a car like that I'd do it, like the article says it would be badass to say I built that motor.

i wonder if you could use any name on the plaque.. could you imagine buying a used corvette 4 months from now cause some fool couldn't make his payments but his name was Gaylord Focker?, and it's embedded into the engine..

Wife's boss has a few vettes, just bought a 2010 Z06 last year. He wanted the ZR1 but it was a significant wait to get the one he wanted (iirc it was over 6 months)

Either motor trend or car and driver did a comparison between the zr1 and the top of the line ferrari. Zr1 handled better and was faster

That's kind of cool that people are willing to pay to perform labor building something they will buy. I'd do it

Think of the experience you will gain and how much extra knowledge you will have when you need to fix or work on it. Plus having to pay someone to teach you and all the extra hours it takes to build one of these. I'm sure the process is a lot more slower then having it built in a factory that makes roughly 200 of these in an 8 hour period

wtf are you talking about??
putting cylinders into an engine block doesn't teach you shit about how to fix the thing when it breaks.
unless the block or pistons shatter and you have to rebuild the engine.....but why would you be doing that anyways.
dumbass

lol @ fixing and working on it
Likely, that will be the last time they see the engine, other than the times they open the hood to show it off at the clubhouse.
