No clue why they call them fucking blackheads when it's just grease but I do it maybe 4x a year with my fingers but it scars :(

i usually squeeze it out with my finger nails. my nose becomes greasy quite rapidly and i have to do this almost every week to 2 weeks. the area around my nostrils/cheek is what produces the most. i've squeezed out a crater before and left my face with a crater the thickness of a needle. kinda gross..

I tried some the other day. Though I cheaped out and bought the store brand stuff. It pulled "some" of the shit but now much of it. I get better results by squeezing and using clearasil pads.

FYI Take a hot shower first to open up your pores then leave it on 2x as long as they say so it gets really hard.

Are the Bioré pore strips any good?

Not if you want more than a quick blackhead fix. None of the dermatologists Street Cents consulted recommended pore strips as the best product to get rid of blackheads – not even as the best over-the-counter anti-blackhead product.

Dermatologists Street Cents spoke with say these strips aren't a long-term solution or a preventative black head treatment. They remove the surface of a blackhead, leaving the majority of the problem deep in the pore.

What to look for to treat blackheads

According to the dermatologists Street Cents consulted, over-the-counter products with salicylic acid or glycolic acid work well.

Salicylic acid is a beta-hydroxy acid (BHA). BHAs, in addition to exfoliating the top layer of skin, brighten dull skin and clean out clogged pores by getting into the oil glands and breaking down dead skin cells to target blackheads.

Glycolic acid is an alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA) from sugar cane. AHAs are exfoliants that increase skin cell turnover by dissolving the protein bonds between the cells. As a result, dead skin cells fall off to show off the fresh, soft skin underneath. Acids only get into the outermost layer of the skin. AHAs can even out skin tone, which makes them ideal for discolorations or generally blotchy skin. They make skin more vulnerable to the sun.

Over-the-counter products with those key ingredients should work for mild cases of blackheads. So look at the ingredients list. If it's not listed, call the 1-800 and ask what's in it.

Dermatologists told Street Cents that benzoyl peroxide, although good for acne, doesn't do much for blackheads.

Another route to try is facials. A facial entails a cleansing and massage, a steam treatment that softens and draws dirt from the skin, extractions of black and whiteheads, and a mask tailored to your skin condition.

Other solutions

For stubborn blackheads, dermatologists have solutions.

Back to Marilyn's question -- what combats blackheads really well? Well, if you have a bad case of blackheads that BHA and AHA over-the-counter products would get rid of, you might want to turn to topical retinoids. Dematologists say topical retinoids are the best blackhead solution. But they involve a doctor's prescription.

Retinoids are Vitamin A derivatives you can use to unblock oil gland pores. They're especially effective on black and whiteheads. Topical retinoids unclog pores, allowing other topical medications - like antibiotics - to enter the hair shaft and fight underlying infection. Topical retinoids also work to reduce outbreaks by preventing dead cells from clogging pores. Side effects of topical retinoids include sunlight sensitivity and dry, red or peeling skin.

What not to do

Dermatologists Street Cents spoke with didn't recommend self-extracting. One dermatologist says, "One false move, and you could end up with an infected cyst."

But the same dermatologist says if you're desperate and feel you have to take matters into your own hands, do it after a hot shower, when pores are soft and dilated. Apply gentle, even pressure around the pore using a comedone extractor - available at drugstores. But extractions are only a quick fix.

Over-scrubbing your skin or using too many medicines can irritate and dry out your skin. That can cause more acne to develop.

Dirt doesn't cause blackheads. So don't overdo it by washing your face too often. And in terms of too many medicines – you don't have to buy and apply the whole line of blackhead products. Start with just one and see how it works.
